Regarding the distinctive military units found in castles, such as chakrams, elephants, and Teutonic Knights, it is worth asking if they can receive upgrades from blacksmiths, other buildings, and universities.
For instance, if one creates a large group of Khmer Ballista Elephants, will they benefit from a siege bonus similar to the one offered to war elephants used by Persians, or from a melee armor bonus offered by the blacksmith buildings?
Likewise, do chakrams receive any university chemistry bonuses like skirmishers and archers do when they use flaming ammunition?
Look at each unit’s stat page on the AoE2 wiki.
It’ll tell you which upgrades affect them.
This stuff can get kinda complicated, but broadly the answer is yes.
Teutonic Knights benefit from infantry blacksmith upgrades as well as squires and arson from the barracks.
Persian War Elephants benefit from cavalry blacksmith upgrades and bloodlines/husbandry from the stable.
Archer unique units (say Mayan Plumed Archers) benefit from archer blacksmith upgrades, thumb ring from the archery range, and chemistry/ballistics from the university.
Ballista Elephants are one of the most confusing units in the whole game in terms of upgrades.
They benefit from cavalry armour upgrades in the blacksmith (no blacksmith attack upgrades), bloodlines, husbandry, chemistry, siege engineers and the unique tech double crossbow.
For any unit you can check on the wiki here https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Ballista_Elephant and it will tell you which upgrades apply.
Ballista Elephants benefit from these?
