I’ve started playing AoE2 recently and it’s the most engaging strategy game I’ve experienced.

Despite playing through the single player campaigns, I often find myself creating units without understanding their ideal usage.

Do you have any tips for a newcomer like me on how to approach the game?

    That’s a very open question:)
Plus some campaigns are too specific a scenario.

Anyway some basic tips would be:
    1) Always keep your TC producing
    2) Learn unit counters
    3) Remember your eco upgrades and your blacksmith upgrades
    4) Try learning a basic build order (Scouts, Archers, etc)
    5) Watch some beginner tutorials on YT (Hera and Survivalist have some very good stuff)

Try some of the Art of War missions.

They teach you more than the William Wallace introduction does.

The Art of War (which you can find under ‘learn to play) scenario ‘Land Battle’ teaches you the basics of which unit type is good in which situation.

    1.

    Play either cavalry or archer.

I would pick Franks or Britons and only play those two until you get your basic fundamentals down.

    2.

    Follow a build order.

They basically tell you how to optimally play the early game so there’s no confusion early on.

    3.

Play 1v1 vs AI from lower difficulty until extreme.

This lets you practice your basic fundamentals until you’re comfortable.

    4.

    Play Arabia.

    5.

Consistently beating EX AI will probably allow you to climb to ~1200 on the ranked ladder.

Honestly, aside from playing and seeing things work/fail, watching casted games is probably the best way to develop some meta knowledge and how to approach generic situations in game
