Totally normal. 1000 being average is not at all representative of most people jumping in to ranked. If you’re losing in the late game I would guess it could be a couple of different things.

Let me know if any of these stick out to you.
    .
    1: Lack of control.

There can be a ton of units in late game and that can be hard to manage.

You may need to check out hotkeys.

Control group your armies so you can manage alll those units and get them into the fight.

Use the attack move key to get those big armies attacking the nearest building or unit.

    Stuff like that..

2: Upgrades: The later the game gets the more technology becomes relevant.

Make sure you’re checking your blacksmith..

3: Economy: You might be falling behind in villager production.

If you’re finding your opponent just has so much more to spend than you it could be you aren’t making enough villagers.

    .

These are the main things I see at this level but I also saw a person at 400 elo get like 200 kills with one siege onager so it just depends 11

    At 400 ELO…

    * you’re almost for sure not constantly producing villagers from your town center for the first 30 minutes.

The question is how much downtime do you let your town center go for?
    * you’re likely not using enough hot keys that allow you to cycle through production buildings and queue units.
    * Almost no chance you ever get above 60-70 villagers in a game (ideal amount is around 120 and generally you want to get there as fast as possible.)
    * you’re probably not so great at using control groups and cycle hot keys to quickly switch between your army attacking and your economy balancing every few seconds.
    * you almost certainly getting very inbalanced resources throughout the game.

Ideally you should be near 0 in every resource most of the time to maximize production.

You probably are floating thousands of extra resources in Imperial Age instead of using them to kill your enemy.

Practicing any one of those should help you improve.

    It is 100% not normal.

I would guess you should be ~1k after 120 games.

At least if you are playing to win.

If you just hop in randomly and play some wonky strat for fun, it is normal yes.

Some players are good, some bad.

Thats how it is in all aspects of life.

Maybe you are exceptional in something else.

It’s impossible to win in the industrial age.

It depends on what you mean by normal? 400 elo is *well below* the average, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing if you don’t care about that kind of thing.

I mean yeah, you have to making some big mistakes to be 400 elo.

I don’t think age up times is the best metric for skill evaluation.

The game situation completely impacts how and when you go up.

Something better would be like TC idle time for example.

Watch LEL by T90, he points out some common mistakes low elo players make, maybe you are doing some of that stuff too.

You can probably improve a lot by someone watching some recorded games of you and pointing out mistakes.

However, if you have fun at 400 Elo, there is nothing wrong per se. 🙂

Gonna push back on the consensus and say this is not too far off the normal path, assuming this is your first competitive RTS.

It is especially tough as you get to late game where there is so much going on to spend your attention on.

The learning curve is long and steep.

Unfortunately at 400 Elo I daresay you’re missing alot.

Post your gamertag tag if you want, someone can watch a game of yours and comment.

    Otherwise start with this video:

Plenty of beginner guides/how to play videos on YouTube.

It can be normal if you’re new to Aoe 2 or rts in general & hop into ranked.

So, just enjoy your current elo and try to learn.

Watch replays of close games & losses.

Late game you need to learn civilization strengths & unit compositions, & have a strong eco with military too.

It takes time to learn everything, & macro is just hard.

You’re calling the “Imperial Age” the “Industrial Age,” so yes, you’re missing some things.

That being said, if you’re having fun then keep going.

If you’re by having fun, it looked like people have given some good advice already.

beat art of war with silver/gold medals
watch good players play and do what they are doing instead of what you are doing
