Am I Missing Something? No Hand Cannoners in My Spanish Archery Range After Playing a Game

I recently played a game as the Spanish faction and noticed that there were no hand cannoners available in my archery range.
I am curious if there is anything I might be overlooking or missing in the game.

Yes, you were missing chemistry
When you reach the Castle Age, you can build a building called a University which allows you to research various technologies that upgrade different things (mostly buildings).
One of their Imperial Age technologies is Chemistry, which unlocks gunpowder units and increases the damage of other things (mainly arrows).
Without Chemistry, the only gunpowder units available are uniques from the castle like janissary and conquistador.
