Age of Empires 2 Cheat Engine & Trainers (2026): Unlimited Resources, God Mode & More

Age of Empires 2 has two very different kinds of “cheats”: the built-in cheat codes you type into the chat box, and external trainers or Cheat Engine that modify the game’s memory. This guide covers the second kind. If you just want the classic typed codes like robin hood or cheese steak jimmy's, see our full Age of Empires 2 cheat codes list instead.

Cheat codes vs. trainers: what’s the difference?

In-game cheat codes are official, built into every edition, and need nothing extra — press Enter, type the code, press Enter again. They cover resources, instant wins, and the famous cheat units.

Trainers and Cheat Engine are third-party tools that read and write the game’s memory while it runs. They let you do things the codes can’t — set an exact resource amount, freeze population, enable god mode, or keep effects active continuously. The trade-off is that they’re unofficial, only sensible in single-player, and can break with game updates.

Using Cheat Engine with Age of Empires 2

Cheat Engine is a free, open-source memory scanner. The typical workflow for AoE2 is to scan for a current resource value (for example your wood count), change it in-game, re-scan for the new value to narrow the results, and then edit the located address to whatever you want. The same approach works for food, gold, stone, and population.

A few practical notes:

  • It only makes sense in single-player — skirmish, campaign, or the scenario editor.
  • The Definitive Edition’s multiplayer is protected; do not attempt memory editing in ranked or online lobbies.
  • Values can shift between patches, so older address tables may stop working after an update.

Ready-made trainers (no scanning required)

If you’d rather not scan memory by hand, pre-built trainers wrap the same idea in a one-click interface:

  • WeMod — a popular free trainer platform with community-maintained options for AoE2: Definitive Edition, typically including unlimited resources and instant building.
  • PLITCH (formerly MegaDev) — a subscription trainer with god-mode and resource options.
  • Tomato / generic table trainers — community Cheat Engine tables shared on forums; quality and freshness vary.

Always download trainers from their official sources, and expect anti-virus tools to flag memory editors as a false positive.

Is using a trainer safe or fair?

For single-player, it’s your sandbox — have fun. Keep three things in mind:

  • Achievements: using any cheat or trainer disables Steam/Xbox achievements for that session, exactly like the in-game codes.
  • Saves: drastic memory edits can occasionally corrupt a save, so keep a backup of anything you care about.
  • Multiplayer: never use trainers online — it’s against the terms of service and the DE actively guards ranked play.

Which should you use?

For quick fun, nostalgia, or the cheat units, the built-in cheat codes are faster and safer. Reach for Cheat Engine or a trainer only when you want effects the codes don’t offer — an exact resource total, a permanent god mode, or a frozen population cap — and only in single-player.
