What is the Reason Behind Labeling Non-Gold Units as “Trash”?

I understand why gold is scarce late in the game, and why these units are often referred to as “cheap” – but they are actually really effective counters against powerful units that cost gold.
Halberdiers are a great way to counter mounted units, so I like to use them in tandem with cavalry.
It’s strange to me when people call them trash, because they are really useful and can be a powerful part of a successful military strategy.
