I’ve seen that the most effective strategy is a stream-based mini tourneys for LELs within a friendly and possibly native-language community.

There was a czech streamer on twitch who made like 1000 ELO tourneys, casted them and didn’t even make the competitors look funny or stupid, even though the whole stream was super fun.

He was a variety streamer and he scored like 500-1000 viewers which is great for a minority language and a minority game.

I am confident that lots of people picked up rated games after watching that.

Team games are a good way to get people in

For many of us single player folks, multiplayer is just not an option.

As someone with small kids it’s a rare occasion that I can be certain that I will be able to play uninterrupted when I play, so being able to pause and save games is essential.

I’m dreaming of one day having more time again to join in on the ranked game action where I will probably be on the lower spectrum, but by that time the multiplayer scene might be quite dead, which is a pity.

i’m probably a huge outlier in this but honestly i love playing campaigns the most, and i’ve played tons of custom campaigns to scratch the itch.

i like the multi-objective story-driven games more than the straight up strategy battles of multiplayer, i guess.

i’d be interested in co-op campaigns but i don’t know anyone else who plays, and i’m worried i’d frustrate a stranger by not being good enough haha.

besides, learning build orders and whatnot just sounds like too much work, tbh

I only play SP or co-op campaign or co-op vs AI skirmish with friends.

None of us have any interest in MP – not sure there’s anything that would bring us over, it is what it is; and it’s fine.

If you think you are minority, think about folks who play multiplayer custom scenarios.

We hardly ever had more than 100 active members combined.

Adding more casual/stressfree online game modes.

I don’t know what that would look like exactly.

But that would bring in people who don’t want to sweat and who typically prefer chilling against the AI

I’m happy with how it is, and will always be unless the player base dies out completely.

The game is what it is, and isn’t what it isnt.

For an RTS game of it’s nature it’s doing pretty well and any big changes in the nature of gameplay loop will hurt the integrity of it, and therefore make veterans unhappy and bring in more casuals.

Game pass and so on would be blasphemy to the game.

Loot boxes and micro transactions are a cancer to gaming and you won’t believe me, but people playing games for the purpose of skin purchasing loop are not people you want in your game.

Game pass and loot boxes are just cash cows for the company which increase their profits but dont inherently attract more gamers.

If a game has skins but isn’t fun you won’t play it either way.

There’s a scale somewhere from league of legends all the way to chess.

Does chess have battle passes or skins?

No it doesn’t, and it doesn’t need to.

You can’t coax people Into playing chess besides just making it more interesting with YouTube or tournament content, which has been done and works.

Aoe2 is definitely on the chess side of that scale.

Ranked Aoe is a very stressful experience that I love.

Many people however want to just chill and would never like it

I play games to get away from people, competing with someone is kinda the opposite of that

I’m sorry I had this experience with TTRPGs.

I don’t like playing with other people.

I don’t like to compete, I like to CRUSH my enemies, and I am not a good winner and am a worse loser.

Victory gives me no thrill, such is the pain of defeat.

I should not play non cooperative games with anyone.

And I sure as shit don’t want to.

So why do I play AOE2?

    For the stories of course!

It is the stories that fascinate me, set my soul on fire!

This is why I stopped playing AOE3.

I love the mechanics, but the main campaign is Assassin’s Creed level dogshit.

Track down their adress, use Bill Gate’s Hit Squad to hold a gun at their head and force them to play ranked.

Get on to it Billy boy

I just don’t have any interest in playing competitive games with strangers tbh.

I love playing with my friends against the computer.

I am not a Capital G Gamer, my reflexes are shit, trying to outmaneuver someone else stresses me out.

I’m sure there’s some people who do have the temperament to play competitively but don’t for whatever reason.

But I suspect there are at least as many like me.

I enjoy playing single player because I actually like the history aspect of the campaigns and because I don’t break down the game to math.

Hell, I even fence in cows in a pen.

Playing against somebody else who has mastered what beats what and spanning buildings and what not holds no appeal for me.

Watching T90s LELs and seeing the community on here encouraging people to lose until they find the correct ELO is what pushed me to try online multiplayer.

Before that I had put ~1000 hours in during the last few years just playing against the ai with my brother and ranked just looked terrifying.
