I believe that weaker civilizations should be given more variety and space for interesting technologies.
These effects would not significantly alter the game, as they do not become powerful until late in the game.
The Britons, for example, have two strong economic bonuses, a strong team bonus, and an open tech tree, yet they are still not overpowered.
Technologies such as Mahouts, Strongholds, Zealotry, Howdah, Paiks, Royal Heirs, Pavise, Shinkichon, Nomads, Inquisition, Corvinian Army, Kataparuto, Medical Corps, and Timurid Siegecraft could all be considered for bonuses for various civilizations.
The Druzhina technology could even be a bonus for the Slavs, as it would only become powerful in the late game when players can afford it.
It would give the Slavs more options in the Castle Age and make Longswords more useful against Knights.
Additionally, the Pavise technology should be given to the Italians, and the fishing ship bonus should be given to the Vietnamese or Sicilians, to make them more balanced on land and water.
I generally agree but if you give up a lot of these techs you need to new techs for for these civs to get.
Another solution is just make these UTs much much cheaper.
Personally, I don’t think CTs should be locked behind castles.
Actual unpopular opinion: the real problem is the number of civilizations.
we’re past the point where devs can come up with good creative bonuses/techs.
Lithuanian douche incoming 11
They’re not bonuses because bonuses don’t get names
Zealotry, howdah and nomads should be civ bonsues instaead of UTs.
Dont know about other but inquisition and kataparuto would be op if it was a civ bonus.
Inquisition you can convert scouts before the monk dies and kataparuto kills castels so fast its not even funny.
tbf people have been asking for these for literally years.
stronghold, mahouts, pavise, medical corps (even though its brand new) have repeatedly been suggested to be buffed or made into civ bonuses
this sub is so hypocritical it really depends who says something, not what they’re asking for, but who says it
Actually upon reading the title I thought of Slavs.
Totally correct about Burmese though, who makes a castle AND elephants in castle age?
Makes no sense to me.
Same with chatras.
Be careful about inquisition man, it can mean a lot in monk wars or smushes and that could get pretty disgusting if you don’t need a castle for that.
Atheism could be a civ bonus.
Bearded axe, man I hate this UT so much.
Just give it to the damn unit and stop clogging up a UT slot that could be interesting.
Same thing with berserkergang.
Make them free and instantly researched in the age they are normally available, and I think with a few small tweaks it could be fine(Yeomen for instance should be changed removed entirely in this case or only affect towers).
But then people will clamor for more stronger techs that cost resources and time…I think it increases power creep, which AOE2 already has an issue with.
So it’s both good and bad IMO
As long as you don’t make Stirrups a civ bonus 😀
I agree, especially with the Persian Mahouts
Related idea
All bonuses should have a name like UTs.
Further customize the civs and add historical depth.
Not that ridiculous given in AOC Goths were the only civ with 2 unique techs.
