Many online guides claim to be a “Beginners Guide to This” or “Beginners Guide to That”.

While some of these guides can be helpful, most of them consist of basic tips such as “build houses”.

It can be challenging to find guides that go beyond the beginner level.

Currently, the writer can comfortably win against AI at the Moderate level.

However, when playing at the Hard level, it takes a lot of effort to win.

As such, the writer is looking for more advanced tips and tricks, such as information about specific maps or unique strategies that they may not have known about.

They would greatly appreciate any assistance.

theres not a lot of that available.

survivalist is the only creator who approaches intermediate level education from a more or less systematic angle.

everyone else is basically: watch gameplay and extrapolate, but that obviously takes a lot more time

I think if you struggle against hard ai, then beginner guides – or rather: further optimizing what you have learned already – will still get you quite a long way.

Your next step is likely to learn a build order.

Look up Cicero’s build order mod in the mod store, pick one that sounds fun to you, and practice it until you have it down cold.

Getting good at a build order should be enough by itself to let you beat the extreme AI.

At an intermediate level a lot is going to becovered by build orders, understanding the eco transition for feudal -> castle, and knowing what to make in castle.

Build orders are usually well optimized for the early game, but understanding *why* to do something in it can help you learn a lot about dark age especially.

With an initial Feudal plan supplied by a build order, you also need to know what eco to go for in Feudal age.

This can be boiled down pretty simply into 2 main directives: 1.) Eco to sustain troop production or 2.) Farms to advance to castle age.

Having a solid number of farms quickly (particularly with horse collar/wheelbarrow) is therefore seen as having a “solid economy” even at a high level because it can help you sustain villager/military production and allows you to move towards castle age.

If you’re going all in feudal you’d have to make adjustments, as well if you have access to fishing ships, but this is generally appropriate.

Castle age is much more complicated and really opens you up to a ton of different compositions/strategies and you have much more control over eco expansion as well so that’s probably one of the hardest parts to teach, so I’ll stop here before I make a fool of myself.

I’m working on a video series for exactly this.

Got the idea cause I have a few buddies I play with who are all at about your same level, and I want to help them get closer to the 1k elo level (roughly the hardest – extreme AI’s).

Are there any specifics you would want a tutorial like this to focus on?

I’m having trouble knowing how much time to spend on what topic, etc.

Basic road map for now is 1.

    Early game fundamentals, 2.

    Hotkeys & ctrl groups, 3.

Common maps and how they play, 4.

Basic fast castle build order, 5.

    Army compositions, 6.

    Scout rush build order, 7.

    Booming & late game eco.

I’ll post it in this sub eventually.

The Hard AI loves Archer rushes, so making counter units based on the strategy is important.

Beating Hard AI is probably still “Beginner Level” in terms of most guides

Okay then reduce idle time (of villagers and especially TC).

So you get them resources for a start.

Then try to spend all of them all the time.

Try to experiment on what you spend them and over time you will get a grasp of what’s affordable and efficient.

Try to minimize idle time of military buildings.

Check out aoe2detools by Survivalist to figure out what eco you need for production.

Try to calculate how many villagers you need to afford a certain powerspike like fast fletching archers or fast ballistics crossbow.

If you seriously do this you will have created your first build order.

Of course you can just google for the best build orders that werr optimized by pros or geeks (maybe there is overlap?)

Try to learn scouts, man-at-arms into archers and fast archers, that’s a solid baseline for arabia and other open maps.

If you want to play closed maps like arena you should certainly learn a fast castle (into Boom, or into castle drop, or just 2 stable knights for team games).

Of course at any point you could jump into multiplayer but you will probably get rekt early on.

I haven’t been at the starting 1000 elo for some time but I think the extreme AI is about as good, maybe worse.

So either try to beat the hardest or even extreme first or accept that you will drop some elo first

At some point you will find evenly matched opponents though.

I have been doing civilization reviews for the last 20 months ranging from 1,k to 1,2k Elo.

In those reviews I usually (near the end) have some practical tips that may be of interest to an intermediate player.

That is what I would identify with anyway.

    [here is a link to January’s review](https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/10qdktn/month_19_koreans_analysis_in_comments/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

I have another coming up at the end of this month and you can visit my profile to go all the way back.

    Hope these help!

Check out MrPlanners YouTube videos of MrSlow or watch his vods.

He explains what he’s doing while playing with 20 eapm.

Morleygames on YouTube has fantastic build orders.

Hera and Survivalist have really good educational content, both including coaching sessions videos.

And they both have separate gameplay channels.

    What’s your Elo?
