I have been playing Age of Empires for a while, but it wasn’t until I got the Definitive Edition that I really started to understand how to be successful.
Even on the standard difficulty setting, I would often find myself overwhelmed by my opponent’s army, so I stuck to the campaigns.
After doing the challenges, however, I developed a better understanding of the Dark Age Build Order and was eventually able to beat the Hardest AI in a 1v1.
I have also noticed that it can be difficult to boom when rushing.
In my last game, the AI beat me to Feudal and Castle, but I was able to reach Imperial Age before they did.
It seems like rushing can prevent the enemy from reaching full power, but I am not sure how effective it is since it can be hard to destroy Town Centers until you get siege in Castle Age.
I am wondering if castle dropping is a good tactic and how much resources should I dedicate to making military units.
I am also curious about how much of an impact I can make by harassing and killing enemy villagers.

Ready for ranked?
Castle dropping is a good tactic, but it’s situational on open maps.
You need enough of an advantage that the castle will go up.
That comes from inflicting enough losses on their army, having enough of an eco lead that your army can at least break even, or going against an opponent who chooses to boom/castle drop you instead of building an adequate military.
It’s obviously a stronger tactic with civs that have cheaper or faster-building castles.
On open maps, you should start dedicating resources to military units at the start of Feudal Age, if not sooner.
How much military you need is based on what you’re trying to accomplish with them. “The bare minimum” is a good axiom if you’re trying to defend and reach Castle Age quickly, “until diminishing returns” is good if you’re trying to get a lead in Feudal, “at all costs” is good if your win condition requires you to cripple the opponent in Feudal.
The bare minimum is maybe 1 spear per 2 enemy scouts or 2 skirms per 3 archers, and you can skimp even more if you’re walled.
When you’re trying to get a lead in Feudal, 2 scouts + starting scout is safe to make if you open scouts, as is 4 archers if you open archers. “At all costs” rush strategies usually have their own guides, stick to those.
The way I quantify vil kills is by thinking of them as being worth -25 res/min.
Being 3 vils ahead is worth a free offensive Feudal Age military unit every minute. 25 seconds of idle TC counts as a vil kill against whoever’s idling.

February 3, 2023 at 12:48 am #8367HaslorGuestAs all answers in aoe2, of course it depends, but on an open map you should Ideally start making an army at around 9 minutes into the game(some seconds earlier or later depending on strat and unit choice).
That will delay you of course, but if your enemy doesn’t react with their own army, the game can basically be won in feudal age.
February 3, 2023 at 12:48 am #8368FloosWorldGuest>So what I’m wondering is, how early should you start dedicating
resources to making military units and how much should you go for?It depends on the strategy you’re going for.
If we assume a normal Feudal play with a Scout or Archer Rush, as soon as you hit Feudal Age.
For a scout rush, I’d say 3-4 scouts in addition to your starting scout are enough.
For Archer rushes, you should always research Fletching before attacking with your archers.
Your main goal while rushing is to annoy the enemy, not neccesarily kill their villagers.
If you’re the defender against a rush, don’t overproduce counter units as that otherwise could massively delay your Castle Age time.
If you see the enemy coming with 4 scouts, you don’t need 7 or 8 Spearmen to deal with them, less are fine.

>By the way, is castle dropping a good tactic?
It…
depends again on map and strategy.
On maps like Arena, Castle drops are part of the maps identity and drops happen as early as 13-15 minutes ingame, depending on the civ ofc.
A castle drop can annoy your opponent as well and secure you map control which can be crucial to eventually win the game.
