As a beginner player, I enjoy using the Mayans civilization in the game, but I am unsure if there is any advantage of using pikemen when I already have access to the eagle warriors, aside from the fact that wood is cheaper than gold.

Both units have bonuses against cavalry, so would pikemen be useful against elephants or other units?

Pikemen are an anti cavalry option.

Eagles excel in raiding and against archer units.

Eagles trade well vs light cavalry (scout – lcav – hussar line) and vs camels but they are not good vs heavy cavalry (knights, steppe lancers, Leitises (take that, Lith pedants), Boyars, konniks, keshiks).

Their +3 bonus vs cavalry is not enough to overcome the massive difference in attack, melee armour and HP.

unupgraded Eagle warrior: 7ATK, 0 melee armour, 2 attack rate, 55HP

unupgraded knight: 10ATK, 2 melee armour, 1.8 attack rate, 100HP

So with equal upgrades, a kt will do 10 damage to an eagle and an eagle will do 5+3=8 to a kt, but kts attack a little faster and have much more HP.

kts are a little faster, especially with husbandry, although eagles with squires are almost as fast and bump into each other far less.

    kts can get bloodlines.

Unique techs make Eagles much better in imp but you still want the spearman line if you are facing a cavalry civ.

Wood is cheaper than gold before gold runs out, before that point imperial mayan eagles are great.

Typically mayans make lots of xbow or plumes then switch into eagles later on in imp with the unique technology.

The two units work well together except that they need lots of upgrades.

Try to focus on archer numbers upgrades first then use eagles if your opponent has a good counter like mangonels or skirms.

Pikes you can use against cavalry as a cheap and disposable unit that you can make unlimited numbers of.

Eagles are great but you will run out of gold eventually..

    That’s a great question.

Even though pikemen don’t cost cost gold, they’re much slower than calvary and are limited in usefulness for defending calvary raids.

While it’s not exactly ideal to slam eagles into knights or light cav, as a civ without your own cav you often don’t have the option not to.

Eagles will always be great against camels.

Elephants are slow calvary, so that limitation of pikes doesn’t apply.

Elephants also do splash damage and have high hp, so the moderate amount of anti cav bonus eagles have is pretty insignificant, and you will spend all of your gold trying to answer Elephants with eagles.

Pikes make a great meatshield for your archers in a slow push kind of attack.

Absorb skirmisher shots and zone out or kill calvary.

Eagles and plumes are your mobility, use them for raiding and smaller scale fights.

Any time your opponent is making champions or other units that counter eagles (such as mass hand canons) pikes are better just to fill the space and tank shots while your archers do the work.

Arbs and halbs are your cheap mass army, use them to push ground and attack cities with siege rams or trebs.

Note this is against AI, not online multiplayer.

20ish Plumed archers, 3-5 monks in a box formation, on stand ground.

They can hold areas( especially breaches in walls) pretty well without losing too many archers.

Leapfrog them forward. 2 squads of this(40 archers. 10 monks

You can put up to 6(?) Eagle warriors into a Siege Ram, let the rams do the hard work of busting down walls and taking out castles.

If the enemy counter attacks, block him with archers and a few eagles(sometimes I use scorpions), or just pop the eagle warriors out (some or all) to defend the rams. 15-20 Rams, 90-120 eagles.

Keep a couple small squads of eagles moving along with either group to deal with random threats(onagers are bad).

Find a weak point in the wall(few castles and towers), punch in, let the archers and loose eagles wear down their troops, advance, let the rams destroy the castles and town centers, pop the eagles and let them rampage.

Being a mayan you should hoard resources, this can be expensive.

Attack a nearby enemy early and siphon up his gold and stone.

Don’t destroy enemy markets after you take them out of the game, you can trade with it after to keep the gold coming in.

Building a small square of walls and towers (if you have the stone) on their Frontline to anchor your attack.

Not saying i didn’t use trebuchets sometimes in a pinch.

A combined arms approach is probably best.

    Thus just worked for me.

    Why not make both?

Pikes and eagles is a very strong combination.

The pikes do more damage to enemy cavalry, and the eagles soak a lot of damage from any ranged units.

Good luck using them against paladins

Halberdiers deal +32 bonus damage to cavalry.

    Elite eagle warriors +4.

    That alone should convince you.

Knights are generally a counter to eagles, unlike pikes.

Eagles only get like +3 vs cav which doesn’t really fix the fact that they have poor hp and medium damage to start.

Also knights are faster than eagles so they can chase effectively.

Small bonus vs a unit line doesnt mean the unit counters that unit line.

Eagles lose to knights, they get absolutely demolished by elephants.

Even Malay elephants do well against them in a fight.

You’re better off using monks and pikes to defend against elephants, and use the mobility of the eagles to raid the elephant players eco while they’re across the map with their army

So, others alluded to this, but I am going to give it to you straight.

The numbers/stats you see are very, very incomplete.

I highly recommend you get a mod that helps with this.

    Search for a “tooltip” mod.

The most popular works well. (Except when it stops for some reason I still don’t understand…anyone?)

You will see that Halberdiers, e.g., do +32 bonus damage against cavalry.

The standard tooltips/tech tree won’t show you this.

But that leads me to my own question (TLDR: the tooltip mod is currently broken for me):

    [https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/11oz2ay/tooltips_mod_for_tech_tree_keep_breaking_and/](https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/11oz2ay/tooltips_mod_for_tech_tree_keep_breaking_and/)

UPDATE: “Improved Extended Tooltips” mod is working currently for me.

    Try that one maybe.
