I walked in your shoes 2 weeks ago mate.

Played BRs mostly and Open world games.

AoE2 was my childhood game along with Starcraft but I never played online.

I beat the campaigns and increased the difficulty untill I beat most the campaigns on hard.

And 2 weeks ago I built up the courage to jump in online play.

Loosing doesn’t feel great but I try to think why I lost and what can I do better next time.

Eventually you will get to a point where you will have similar skilled players.

One thing to consider besides the fact that you can just keep experiencing the game the way you want to, is that many of us, including myself, had the same nostalgic experience in our youth and then discovered that there’s this whole other world out there and learned to love it.

Possibly even more than the original experience.

Now it’s like I have two games in one.

I still have my childhood love for everything in the game, the sounds the music, the units, civilizations, maps,…

And I also have an awesome eSport to watch and competitive game to participate in.

Hell I’m even playing the game with friends and family who played the game as kids too.

That’s something so rare and unique, it’s hard to describe even.

They did a great job with the definitive edition and it was like a global invitation for everyone to relive their childhood while at the same time to join this awesome competitive scene.

    And the great thing is.

It’s entirely up to you whether you give it a shot or not.

If it’s not your thing, well there’s tons of single player stuff to do with fresh graphics and more content than before.

Brother, just follow my game plan every time, and ignore all the dorks around here(Bless their hearts):

    -black forest large map

    -four bots at medium difficulty

-pick any civ with the goofiest or funniest specialty unit flavor of the day.

    Usually elephants.

    -Enjoy

When I first stumbled over a Viper video on YouTube I was convinced that building more than one town center was a waste of resources and prided myself on beating the hardest AI turtling on Dark Forest.

All jokes aside it is a bit sad to lose the innocence of autonomous discovery.

While I try to avoid outright learning step-by-step build guides through watching Spirit of the Law and some tournaments I accumulated some knowledge that, to be fair, I never would have figured out myself.

This is kind of an ever present thing with RTS games and playing them competitively.

It’s not a bad thing per se, but the way you play RTS games optimally in a PvP setting isn’t always the most like.. “aesthetic” lets say.

Its just the nature of the genre.

There are a few exceptions though, like supreme commander FA is one that comes to mind where the optimal way of playing kind of fits in the theme of the game.

For historical RTS games, ive always had that weird feeling where like..

yes it may be more efficient to like wall off with houses or spam and kite with a certain type of unit or whatever.

But its also nice to play with some historical accuracy like having a nice balance of units and using them like they were historically.

As long as you’re enjoying your experience playing the game, that’s what’s important!
