I’m Frightened by This Subreddit. What Have You Done to My Youth?

I had hoped that the game I was playing would be a magical and wondrous experience, but instead it has become a tactical and laborious endeavor.

I was eager to learn how to play online, but after reading some of these posts, I’m hesitant to give it a try.

I’m being tongue in cheek here, but it’s astonishing to me the various levels of this game.

I don’t mean to offend anyone or the game itself, I’m just making a hyperbolic joke.

I understand that there are different levels of the game, even if I don’t get to them.

Don’t let the sweat lords intimidate you!

My standard build order is 6 on sheep, 4 on wood, ….boars and berries somewhere…..vibes 🙂

the game is really well balanced you totally don’t have to be sweaty, if you play ranked you might need to lose 10-15 games to get to the right elo but once you get to your skill level of matchups you should win/lose about 50% of games and not everyone is super try hard

tbh it’s a really friendly community ime

You can literally not play ranked.

You can play with your friends or you could just go into campaigns or skirmish the ai if you want.

No one is turning the game into a “disgusting tactical sweatiest,” there’s a lot of people who enjoy playing ranked and want to learn how to improve and there are optimal ways to play the game so that’s going to get discussed here.

I agree with one sentiment here which is that the community in general in every forum is obsessed with the pro scene and tends to discount any discussion about people simply trying to have fun with the game.

The most toxic way this comes up is when people ask for ways to play casually and the replies inevitably are always “just play ranked!” Its like, no I don’t want to spend my life min/maxing my way to my natural Elo.

It should be considered more legitimate to just want to play for fun and that’s it.

This is a game, not a lifestyle.

SOTL is the only voice in the community that tries to focus a bit more on the fun aspect of it and he’s the biggest youtuber which goes to show there is a silent majority out there.

Ranked games are harsh until you reach your “proper” Elo, after that the fun starts.

Fun is guaranteed it’s a matter of how many matches you have to lose before that and of course your patience.

Edit: I meant “fun” not “gun” 11

I’ve been in a similar boat.

    Hopefully I can encourage you.

When I played as a kid, I always played vikings (two unique units, obviously OP) or Spanish (shooty guys on horses, obviously OP).

    Never played a human.

    Used lots of cheats.

Had lots of fun, no ragerts.

Fast forward to the present, where I casually play team games at around 1400 tg elo, or lower when I play with friends.

Very mid level, better than most but far from great.

I try sharpen my builds, transition between comps, and hit timings.

    I’m a little sweaty.

Love the theory of the game, wrote about 15,000 words so far on a book about it.

I’m fascinated by the depths of the game like you are, even though I know that I’ll never be as “good” as many players above me nor do I intend to try very hard.

    Guess what?

Neither is necessarily a better approach.

I have about the same amount of fun as I used to have, just a different kind.

There’s lots of ways to play this game from top level Arabia to co op scenarios with a friend.

And they can all be really good.

I’ve never really done campaigns, but some people love them.

Haven’t even touched CBA, which is apparently its own little world.

    Doesn’t matter.

    Still no ragerts.

Also, as others have pointed out, ranked ladder should scare you less than it does. (I admit my heart was beating pretty fast the first time I queued up tho 11.) Some people think the ranked ladder is about “competitive” play, which supposedly means you have to try hard.

    But you don’t.

The ranked ladder has only one constant effect for virtually all players who stay on it long term: you will win half your games and lose half your games and they will feel like a pretty even match.

If you’re at 200 elo, you will still win half your games, and you will have fun.

If you’re at 2000 elo, you will still lose half your games, and you will still have fun.

    Fun is the great constant.

    Fun is always with us.

Sweaty or not, the fun remains.

    No ragerts either way. 🙂

    There’s no reason to worry.

    You aren’t playing for money.

You’ll find you ELO level and then win one lose one on average after that.

    Just have fun.

One thing you can try that I did is go to the workshop and get some custom made campaigns.

There’s rpg style ones down to big fun battle ones and some are made just as good and even better than the normal campaigns.

They’ll keep you occupied for a while
