I really want to be successful using the Teutons in this game, but my friend has an answer for every strategy I come up with.
Whether it’s walls, towers, castles, infantry, cavalry, or siege weapons, he always knows what to do.
I’m still learning the game, so I’m not sure if the Teutons have any other advantages.
I’ve had some success with the Khmer, but I don’t particularly care for them.
The only time I won with elephants was when he followed my advice and got halberdiers, and since then it’s been a constant struggle for me.

Teutons have way better late game options IMO.
February 14, 2023 at 2:39 am #12198crazyyocoGuestMonks.
Monks are always the answer, no matter the question.
February 14, 2023 at 2:39 am #12199Got-FreedomGuestYou can simplify things by practicing a scout rush and go into knights in Castle.
Teutons have some of the strongest paladins in the game.
The downside is that they are slow.
So try to focus on:
– Scout rush
– Get your economy going for castle age knight production from 2 stables
– Always research armor for your cavalry
– Keep spaming knights in castle, don’t let your friend breathe
– Build your economy behind it and go for imperialLate game when gold starts to be a problem you can transition to siege onagers + halberds.
Teutons are slow but if you snowball you can steamroll without too much difficulty on land maps.
February 14, 2023 at 2:39 am #12200HaslorGuestYou are just not skilled enough.
I’m not saying this in a demeaning way, it’s just that for every single thing Japanese can do, teutons have an answer.
It depends on which age you fight in mostly, but for example in imperial teutonic knights(against all melee units except samurai) + onagers(against archers) + bombard cannons(against towers and castles) is something Japanese really don’t have an answer to(add hand cannons if he makes samurai).
February 14, 2023 at 2:39 am #12201BlockliesGuestYou should be able to beat Japanese, you have answers to everything they make, halbs, great siege, hand cannons, heavily armored knights.
This is probably unironically a skill issue, I’m not trying to be mean.
February 14, 2023 at 2:39 am #12202TechChariotGuestIf walls, towers, and castles are part of the conversation, then chances are you’re making it to at least Castle age, probably imperial age.
Both Civilizations are Infantry + siege, with Teutons having a heavier armor focus and Japanese being a bit more well rounded, in terms of their archer options.
But those archers imo are only really helpful in pressuring the Teutons before castle age defenses go up, afterward the Teutons have a big advantage.
You could go Teutonic knights + siege + monks and it should be pretty unstoppable for him.
Samurai get bonus damage vs Unique Units but Teutonic knights are so heavily armored that it probably cancels most of that out.
If you find that the bonus damage is too much though, you could make champions of your own that are more heavily armored than his champions (albeit not as fast attackers), but it should still be more efficient.
Your siege options are better as Teutons, you get bombard cannons, but most importantly, your siege is inherently conversion resistant from redemption monks, while his siege isn’t.
This means that you can convert his siege more effectively, so he will have a harder time making scorpions/onagers to support an infantry push.
He gets really good monks too, but since yours resist conversion and you have nearly identical open monasteries, you should be able to crush him in an atonement monk battle, which is really where this civ matchup *should* go on Arena.
In ye olden days it would have been over in 25 min, with dozens of monk conversions between both sides 😛
