Hello everyone, I recently started playing AOE2 and I’m already hooked.

It’s no surprise that this game has been popular for many years.

Although I have experience with other RTS games, I’m still new to AOE2 and would appreciate recommendations on which civilizations to focus on based on my playstyle.

I tend to play defensively at the beginning of the game until I have upgraded my units and feel confident enough to go on the offensive.

I prefer simplicity, and don’t enjoy having to build a lot of different unit types or micromanaging many different tasks.

I also prefer land battles over naval battles and ranged units over close combat.

Lastly, I’m not a fan of rushing or sacrificing units unnecessarily.

Please suggest which civilization fits my playstyle the best, and whether it would be a good fit for team games/support.

    Thank you for your help!

Britons, you build a mass of arbalest/longbows and snipe every incoming thing from 12 tiles away.

Beware of rams, they absorb so many shots, you need a secondary unit to kill them.

If facing a cavalry civ, that secondary unit can be halberds, if not I’d do light cavalry.

Yes, britons have a mediocre light cavalry line an cavalry in general, but they sinergize so well with the longbows that it may be worth.

Trebs are a must when you advance, and a couple of monks are optional.

Teutons are a pretty slow and tanky civ, you might like them

Surprised that no one said Portuguese.

You’d probably enjoy the Arena map style of play.

Franks = cheap castles and free farm upgrades, throwing axemen are fun and generally pretty good

Britons = not very defensive, good TC boom, you make archers and they go chut chut chut

Ethiopians = a bit of a bump to get you moving in the early game, one of the best arbalest/siege/halb deathballs in the game

Bulgarians = cheap krepost for defense, heavy cav archer, faster working blacksmiths to get your upgrades

Teutons = cheap farms means a powerful eco, castles have extra range to kill bombard cannons, lots of upgrade to get

Koreans = defensive towers, war wagon is individually the most powerful ranged unit

Mongols = mangudai are the most powerful ranged army, fast early game to help you get there, siege ram go vroom vroom

[St4rks in-depth civ guides](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkfKpVNo6sRmKTnbNyYYaUGx_f095Ij0g), only 5, but they have basic ones suitable for all playstyles.

    Find your favorite.

Likely Franks for strategy simplicity: open scouts, see whats up, def what’s coming, macro knights and eco.

Several players of prior RTS-background with any notions of macro and common strategy quickly got to ~top5% or 1700/wherever with Franks, as they are so powerful and most of all, very very easy to play.

Mongols and macro all the way to elite mangudai+meatshield is another option, Mongols is one of the guided ones, see that.
