Both games are great in their own right and if you can spend the money, I’d say go for both.

    Pro AoE 2:

    * Sheer amount of content (mainly due to being a remaster)
    * Many ways to customize your game
    * Easy-to-use editor where you can make your own scenarios
    * Still receives content (a DLC that brings AoE 1 into AoE 2 is on the way)
    * Ranked map pool rotates more often (if that’s your thing)

    Pro AoE 4:

    * Less content (seems like a con at first but that actually means easier to pick up as there’s less bonusses etc to remember)
    * Amazing sound design (civ unique soundtracks, voice lines of villagers change with each age up)
    * Civ unique architecture
    * Some of AoE 2’s “quirks” (if you want to call it that way) are gone e.g.

no more food decay and military units can kill animals
    * New game, so continous support is guaranteed (2 new civs were released for free last year for its 1st anniversary)
    * Ranked uses Ranks (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platin, Diamond, Conqueror – if that’s your thing)

There’s a reason this game has been around since 1999, it’s an all time classic and still continues to be great and engaging in strategies and just generally fun as hell.

I have to say I do love AoE4 for the structure of the campaigns and the production value from the animations and documentary style commentary and real life footage.

That stuff is just such a cool experience

I have played hundreds of hours in 4 and enjoy it a lot.

I played a few games of 2 and found it meh.

I think there’s a lot of nostalgia for it and that’s why people are shitting on 4. 4 may have some issues but it’s much more varied in its civilizations and it’s a newer game and IMO more likely to get continued support

    Definitly aoe2.

Its been around forever and they are still making DLC for it.

Also 2 has a bigger community.

Im willing to wager after 4 is no longer new and people lose interest 2 will still have a community and be played.

I still can’t get over how low resolution units are in AOE4 compared to the amazing graphics of the buildings.

AOE2de on the other hand it’s now an immortal classic.

    So I vote for AOE2.
