    What does this mean?

Is this a question, statement, or indication that I’m not paying attention to the situation?

I’ve seen this phrase used often, for instance, my friend used a flare in his base today.

Do I need to be concerned or is this just an expression?

It means be careful, normally warning about enemies in your base or a mangonel near your archers or whatever.

No idea why he’s flaring his own units tbh

It means you should take care.

Situations which might warrant it are:

    * Your units are being drawn into a dangerous situation, such as castle fire.
    * Onagers are creeping towards your unattended units.
    * There is a flock of horsemen looking for a way into your base or your allies’ bases.

Basically, they’re saying “look out there, buddy, this is a precarious situation and if you don’t take care things might take a sharp turn for the worse.” You should ask them to elaborate if you don’t see the exact reason why.

Maybe there was units close to his base and they disappeared very quickly in the fog of war so you could not see them- which is why he flaired.

Maybe he planned to go on vacation and wanted you to care for his camels.

    Else they get lonely.

Without greater context its impossible to say.

I dont think there is anything wrong with this guy taking extra steps to ensure good communication.

If he didnt say anything at all it would be worse

I usually flare and say care to my allys in following cases.

Ally can be getting raided and he is paying attention on someware.

Or I just lost track of xbow mass and xbows can be heading to my pocket’s woodline.

Or if my ally has idle forgotten army somewhere.

The situatuion you desribed, it means taht his units are at his base so be carefull if you have units out of your base or wanting to move out.

Other uses are to warn you about raid or a mngonel, another enemy player coming to join the fight and probably a few other i dont remember.
