If you ask me, Malians have two uniqueness on their tech trees: full Castle Age tree and only civ with no Bracer and no Blast Furnace.
If properly boomed during late Castle Age, you have a huge and quick powerspike on 19 attack Cavaliers, and Camels/Light Cav are quick to tech to, have a great Melee potential and can kill buildings like Hindustani Stable units if enemy has no Architecture.
As it happens with Teutons or Franks, their Arbalesters are really Hand Cannoneers, but Gbetos can fit that role with an extra mobility that makes them also Raiders.
Is it annoying that they lack FU Pikes and Skirms?
Well, with 14 attack LC (that’s above the average, so their trash looks like that of Turks) and longer lasting gold, perhaps their role is to be a full Castle, early Imp powerspike civ
