Halbs may appear to be a suitable counterpart to elephants, however, they are not.
Instead, another animal should be used as an alternative.
Halbs are cost effective against all cavalry in the game, even Cataphracts.
However, halbs lose 1v1 against nearly all cavalry (I believe they win easily against all variants of hussar and shrivamsha riders in a 1v1)
So if you see 60 war elephants heading towards your base, 60 halbs will be effective, but won’t stop them without additional units/support.
You didnt have enough and/or forgot your blacksmith upgrades
Because halbs have 60hp and no base armor and attack really slowly, and elephants have 14 (or 20) attack with trample and attack relatively quickly.
Are you 1v1 one halb to elephant?
You need a madd of halbs.
halb die in 3 shot and normally attack slower so they can only do 2 hits before they die.
That said there should be many more of them, and 60 damage is no joke.
Sigh.

Halbs is suppose to counter elephant not 1v1, but by 2v1 where 2 halbs is still cheaper than 1 elephant.
But elephants can straight up destroy your base if you don’t have proper counter.
The fact that you can defend against the elephants with such cheap and easily massable unit = counter.

Counter units in RTS in general doesn’t necessarily means 1 counter unit will beat the other unit.
There’s other things behind the scene too.
Why do you assume “that’s not the case”?
They don’t.
Check the blacksmith
Typical „i have an army.
Now i attack and see how it goes“.
Literally doesnt care about game mechanics
it does…
No it wont 1v1, but its halbs, vs elephants, elephants cost a shit ton more, u should have more than ur oponent
Because they cost thrice as much.
It’s a pop efficiency thing.
Eventually your halbs will win, but in a straight 200 pop vs 200 pop fight the elephants win, but not cost effectively.
If you can replenish the halbs quickly, you’ll wear down the ele army to the point where your opponent can’t reproduce them (they’re expensive).
If you can’t replenish the halbs then they win
Use more Halbs.
It’s the hard counter along with monks
Elephants don’t shred halbs except maybe elite war elephants with full upgrades and even then they dont SHRED Japanese halbs unless its a large mass of 40 50 EWE
Elite battle elephants certainly dont shred halbs let alone Japanese halbs and u dont even need 2:1 ratio
Even 15 Japanese halbs will shred 10 elite battle elephants I’m sure of it
