Which Melee Units are Best for Open and Closed Maps?

    I have compiled a list of my personal favorite units for closed maps.

    Kamayuke is a great all-purpose melee unit with one range, but is effective against cavalry and most infantry with its six pierce armor.

    Huskarl is a no-brainer; they are a great choice for any map.

    Ghulam is a great early game option due to its low food cost and bonus to archers.

    Berserk is a great unit for demolishing trash units and taking buildings quickly, and can even kill an imperial camel 1v1.

    However, in team games on closed maps cavalry is not as effective due to the prevalence of halbs.

    For open maps.

    The Coustillier without a doubt is the best melee UU imo.

    The charge attack really utilizes Lanchester’s Law to its fullest, this unit can drop enemy number before the engagement really starts.

    And it has good mobility so it can run away to heal/recharge.

    For closed maps I would add to your list the Mameluke.

    Being able to both counter cav and snipe siege, it can be a hard unit to deal with when massed.

    Fast and cheap to create, cheap to upgrade to elite, 6 pierce armor and a good boost to your other units.

    From a more 1v1 open perspective:

    – Magyar hussar is incredibly good since it can be spammed.
    – Huskarl might be the best, their problem is the rest of the civ has little to offer.
    – Ghulam definitely up there as well, or eagles if you count them as UU.
    – Cataphracts are niche but give a lot of utility in countering small numbers of pikes or eagle.

    I don’t think upgrading them or making many is necessarily good though.
    – Leitis and Keshyk are very good knight alternatives.

    Boyars are good but awkward to play, too expensive.

    Coustillier is pretty good but cheap paladin is more practical after castle age.

    Berserk / woad / samurai are basically just champion alternatives that can come in handy but are not particularly spectacular.

    Quite expensive and easy to counter, and creating infantry from castles is awkward.

    On 1v1 Arabia or any other open map the coustillier is definitely the best, pikes, monks, archers all gone in a few seconds. 2nd best is probably magyar huszar, one of the most cost effective units.

    Shawarma riders are tied with huszars.

    On a closed map, if you can reach it, fully upgraded cataphracts are pretty much unbeatable same with huskarls, literally uncounterable.

    Another good pick is again the coustillier, it just pairs extremely well with burgundians gunpowder or can kill any halbs your opponent uses.

    This is some sort of joke surely?

    Kamayuks die to archers worse than cavaliers do.

    Can we stop pretending that 6 pierce armor makes a unit not die horribly to ranged units in Imperial?

    Do conqs do well vs arbs in Imperial?

    The top 5 should be SR, Ghulam, Huskarl, then like Boyar/Keshik/Coustillier or something.

    Shotel Warrior spam is pretty good.

    Very effective raiders, and in large numbers (which rival Goth infantry in terms of creation speed) are devastating.

    Plus backed by Ethiopian Arbs….

    You’ve picked some of the worst UUs lmao.

    On Open maps all of conqs, Mangudai, Camel Archer, Janissary, War Wagons, Plumes, Arambai, Rattans, Kipchak, Leitis, Keshik and Coustillier are clearly better.

    On closed maps, basically all units with range bar gbeto and throwing axe are better except for Huskarls depending on map and Ghulam depending on situation.

    But as the core of an army you have picked some of the worst UUs sorry my dude.
