I did research on various civilizations and was astonished to discover that none of them can completely counter Siege Rams with Halberdiers, Hand Cannoneers, and Bombards.
These three units seem to be the most effective solution to any issues posed by Siege Rams, such as cavalry, infantry, and other siege weapons.
The Mongols appear to be the most suitable civilization for optimal utilization of Siege Rams.
Although they do not have the same level of protection in all areas, their additional siege options as well as the speed bonus make up for it.
What civilization would you pick as the best for Siege Ram use?
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4495MtG-CrashGuestFU Mongols Ramboghini is the best Siege Ram by far, yeah.
They come so fast, your production buildings to react with are gone before you squeeze out the first unit.
You either sniff it and you’re prepared, or you gonna get annihilated, its beautiful.
But shout-out to Bulgarians because they’re so cheap and come in so early, they’re actually one of the most viable Siege Rams in the game.
And 3rd place goes imo to Celts, and 4th place to Teutons.
And maybe one should mention Gurjara Siege Elephants btw.
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4496Azot-SpikeGuestPersians, Spanish and Byzantines have that combo if I’m not mistaken, but none of them have Siege Engineers.
Byzantines also lack Blast Furnace.
I’d include Teutons in that group, because they lack Siege Ram, but their Capped Rams get extra Melee.
Any civ with Siege Rams can make them shine, they’re a very good unit that is not as easily to deal with as its speed and armor says.
Just pair them with something that kills the main Ram counter of opposing civ.
American civs make Siege Rams shine.
And obviously Mongols and Celts due to their UTs
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4497TevecQGuestCelts come to mind
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4498NeedMoreRumbosGuestEthiopians can cover all bases quite well.
Torsion engine Onager and BBC for siege, melee ranged units & unique threats (mangudai/conquistadors).
FU Halberdier.
Highest DPS archers in the game.
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4499FuturalisGuestI think the real question is: why do you consider Siege Rams the lynchpin of your army?
Their main uses are pushing when your army is already winning, and absorbing arrow fire in massed battles if your enemy happens to go archers.
Neither circumstance is guaranteed.
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4500VelcomeToCinderGuestWhat’s you opinion of the Armored Elephants?
Or does it have to be Siege Rams.
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4501Urc0mpGuestGotta be Mongol.
Gotta go fast + mangudai
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4502laguardia528GuestMongols, Celts, Ethi, Slavs, Cumans and Bulgarians.
Arguably in that order.
All have specific bonuses that contribute, and all have units that cover its weaknesses.
All of them also come with Siege Onager, which is not really a contributing factor, but a neat parallel.
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4503throwawaytothetenthGuestSleeper picks: Vikings and Incas.
Vikings because the amazing up time and siege ram is VERY hard for castle age units/ even early imp units to deal with when army supports.
And viking army is very good at this, in later imp berserk siege ram is amazing combo you can spam for a long time because it’s gold efficient vs so much, and arb siege ram is their bread and butter.
Incas, because Kameyuke+ siege ram is effective vs almost everything.
Add eagle and it’s effective vs literally anything, only a few UUs actually shut this combo down (samurais, catas, etc.)
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4504Upper-Preparation-76GuestSlavs or Bulgarians.
Infantry alongside siege ram to garrison inside helps their speed and dmg.
Also it helps get you quickly past castle fire and then take out vils and cavalry that would attack your rams.
Slavs + Bulgarians have some of the best infantry paired with some of the smoothest siege transitions, so I think they excel at this strategy.
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4505Audrey_spinoGuestFor raiding purposes nothing even comes close to Mongol rams.
Stuff them with some halbs and watch them bolt across the map and into the enemy base before the enemy can even react.
Back them up with CA/Mangudai for anti-infantry, and take out the halbs when you get pushed by cavalry.
They can easily topple multiple buildings in a single raid.
January 26, 2023 at 1:49 pm #4506Denikin_TsarGuestDravidian Siege Elephants with Wootz steel ~~melt~~ do decent damage to units….
They do trample (blast?) damage in a large radius and because it negates all armor, it’s a lot of damage.
