General usefulness and open paths to the civ, I’d say plumes.
But genoese xbows happen to be absolute doom for some civis.
For me is Italians.
Usually archer civ vs cav is arb halb but the unique let you play genoese hussar which is an awesome mobile comp.
I feel like i don’t need to make the UU with any of those civs except italians.
Thats why i voted for them.
With italians you need and want them most of the time.
I’m assuming Longbows currently being in 2nd, we have a community of memers, or a community of 4v4 black forest mains.
I generally find Plumes or Rattans as the most useful thanks to their mobility, with Chu Ko Nu being a solid option and Genose being situational but quite powerful in its niche.
Longbow can dominate for sure, but it tends to be only long team games where you can justify the switch, given the Briton arbs already have great range, and are way easier to mass.
Mayans IMO, great range and great mobility.
Plumes>Rattan>Genoese>Longbows>Chu ko nu (looks better than it actually is, super low rate of fire)
I had to go with Italian Geonese crossbowmen.
I’ve been looking Italians even on land units when I random them.
This unit is why.
So good in almost all situations.
Second choice is rattans for speed and not costing extra gold (main downside of Geonese)
Plumed archers are fast so they are basically closest thing to Meso-american cavalry archer.
Not to mention infantry bonus damage, cheap and elite upgrade that doesn’t cost gold.
Not surprising to see them so high.
But I am surprised to see longbowmen to be second most voted, it’s just +1 damage and +1 range.
Good absolutely, but most of the time briton archers that already have +2 extra range compared to ordinary archers are good enough.
Both Chu ko nu and Genoesse crossbowmen actually offer something different compared to regular archers.
I voted Mayans, their plumed archers are essentially like cavalry archers, and then plus their eagles (if you have the gold) complement each other very nicely.
Italians are also a nice unique archer
Briton’s longbowmen with 12 range are a fun meme unit, but don’t add much more than their 11 range arbalists
Vietnamese rattan archers, for a civilization with the best skirms, aren’t as important
Chinese chu no nu.
You’d think they would do more damage firing more arrows, but the extra arrows just do 1 damage, so not as helpful as you would hope
Hard to judge.
I like genoese crossbowmen because they negate several categories of units, cavaliers or course but also CA and war wagons.
Oh come on, people loving longbows like it’s 1999.
Of all these units, they are the most straightforward and meme archers.
I’m very surprised how underrated rattan archers seem to be.
Against anything that shoots, they are always the best choice, plus they don’t take much damage from castles and tcs so you can raid with them.
Decent speed as well.
