I have been researching the history of each civilization in the game, but I can’t seem to determine the year the game is based on.

Does anyone know when it is set?

Also, if anyone could tell me which dynasty was ruling at that time, I would be very appreciative.

    Thank you.

AoE2 has a history section for this reason, for some reason it is hidden under the gear icon.

The Hindustani in this case represent pretty much all islamic conquerors of northern India, not just Mughals.

    Delhi Sultanate, Ghorids, Ghaznavids, etc.

Actually you can read the history sections on AoE2 wiki too [https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Hindustanis#History](https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Hindustanis#History)

Hindustanis was kind of an umbrella term given by Persians for those who live to the east of the Indus river towards the Gangetic plains (basically North part of India, although these days it’s used to describe India as a whole).

In this game since the civ is represented through Islamic sultanates, you can assume that it begins from the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate – 1206.

The Indians, and by extension the Hindustanis, have had a major identity crisis from inception.

Tangent: this is a common AOE2 problem the further we get away from Euro civs, but they also really screwed up the rest of the Indian civs too.

I was talking with a Dravidian guy the other day and he too was disappointed.

From the history they’re pulling from, they should be the Mugals or the Abbasids.

Hindustani refers to the native Indians under rule from the conqueroring Islamic Caliphate.

Edit: it would be more representative to call them Mugals and have civilians with the same voice lines, like how the Briton nobility (kings/queens and monks, and knights if they talked) speaks Latin while the peseantry speaks anglo-saxon.

It’s like calling the Aztecs the Nahuatl.

The civ is based upon the empire, but the name refers to the general peoples under the empire.

The Turks have a similar problem, the civ is based upon the Ottoman empire, but the campaign depicts the Seljuks and other nomadic tribes, hundreds of years before the Ottomans and gunpowder.

Hindustanis civilization in this game is based on Mughal Dynasty which should be early 16th century

If you own Dynasties of India DLC, i suggest you play Babur campaign, not only for its perfect design and gameplay, also for its great story telling and history.
