African clearing in the map-pool indicates that a lot of African civilizations are being chosen, such as Malians and Portuguese, in addition to Spanish pickers. When playing on this map, I recommend having random enabled, but not going full random and instead picking a civilization that can effectively counter the civilizations your opponents are likely to choose. African clearing has no water, so this may be a factor to consider when selecting your civilization.
Dravidian if water nomad. That house bonus from docks and +wood on age up really smooth out any opening. Plus they have a good navy that can beat the Spanish on water, and full arb does okay against conqs on land.
On normal nomad, stone wall, kill fish, clown.
On land nomad maps, it’s actually pretty easy. Get to castle first, and get military out to force castle drop at home, then raid. I’ve had a lot of success with CA, you just need a mass and ballistics.
Italians
Cry
Shout out for Mongols! Go for an ultra-fast scout rush, and you can ride the hunt bonus into what feels like an FC timing of your own with practice, if you don’t overcommit. If your opponent is insisting on going FC Conqs, they’ll either need to wall up, get very lucky on their map gen, or delay their tc to wait for the perfect spot. All of this leaves room for scouts to hem them in. Best case you win in feudal, worst case, you can shape their castle placement, delay them, and know what is happening and where.
start making archers on feudal, a group of lets say 15 are very good against them on castle age, make sure to do the second upgrade on attack (note they also counter very well the portuguese unique unit)
Berbers, great uu, fastest ships
Malians and Portuguese could be a good answer. Maybe Mayans also? I’m not certain about plumes vs conq’s but with their HP and pierce armor I would think they matchup alright
Surprised nobody had mentioned Vietnamese, finding your enemy instantly allows for so much planning. If you’re close you can go Feudal and punish before Conqs are ever out on African Clearing. If you’re far you go for your own better FC I to monks or xbows.
You’re gonna wanna find Spanish.
Malians and Persians are great on regular nomad because you can make a fishing ship before the TCs are up. Spanish start with an extra vill, you start with an extra fishing ship basically.
On African Clearing there is no extra fishing ship, Spanish beat all (maybe Gurjaras can fight them due to the direct counterpick).
Any civ with good monks and early game bonuses,
i.e. aztecs, bengalis, bohemians
Berbers, Italians and Koreans have UUs that counter Conqs since they’re spammed. Arguably Saracen Mamelukes too, but that unit costs food and depends on you having an untouched Fishing eco
Spanish. The best counter is obviously to just pick Spanish too.
But seriously, for African clearing in particular, I find Chinese to be a really strong civ (personally I think they are better than Spanish on AC). Building the TC on fish allows for basically 0 TC idle time, which means you will be 2 vills ahead of generic civs (1 vill ahead of Spanish) at the start, and an extra vill ahead when they get loom. This boost in eco can really snowball in your favor.
Berbers. Camel Archers are not just fantastic, but also slap Conquistadors senseless. Cheaper knights means you can overwhelm them as well.
If it worked in 711, it will work now 😉
