MemberAlthough I’m new to the game, I’m learning fast. I’ve even managed to secure third place or higher in the last man standing games that I play with my friends, who have been playing for a lot longer than me. The only problem I’ve encountered is that I tend to get trapped in the feudal age for longer than I should, which negatively impacts my progress in the long run. I’ve experimented with several civilizations, including Vikings, Koreans, and Sicilians, but I usually end up struggling in the endgame. My strategy is to focus on building up a formidable defense before launching an all-out offensive attack. What is the best approach for me to optimize this tactic?

GuestOptions
Cumans: Cant get out of Feudal? Just 2 TC Boom and make your way to speedy Paladins. Lacking defensive options tho.
Koreans: We got defense for days. Faster stone mining and free Tower upgrades are great. War Wagons are beefy and crush late game.
Saracens: Let the market solve your upping to Castle problems. Mamelukes are maybe the best mono comp in the game. Market also let’s you fund late game gold comps longer.
Teutons: great boom. Great siege. Slow death March Paladins. Extra garrison space and free murder holes.

GuestByz, Tatars, Khmer, Goths, Mongols…
Really, you should try to change your habits. Everyone starts off with nothing but turtling.

GuestWrong strategy for a newcomer. Do not try and turtle if you are still learning. Defense is fine but do not overdo it. As a newcomer you need to be certain not to overextend your resources leaving your base defended by structures but no troops or castle

GuestGive lithuenians a try. 150 free food means you dont have to min max your food income at the start nearly as much and their spears and skrims move faster making them more viable for defending. They also have very nice tech tree with very strong stable. If that does not suit you try Brits, they are the most straight forward and one of strongest civs in the game. Faster shepherds mean easier start and archers are go to unit in most cases. Pair that with discounted tcs in castle age for superior safety in castle age and insane longbows in post imperial fights making them great pick for anyone that just wants to attack move 100 units forward and watch everything in front melt.

GuestDefensive style is a completely valid style of play, but for your level I would recommend that you learn to play aggressively. Playing aggressively helps you to improve faster and get a better “games feeling”, even if you later decide to be a defensive player.
Now then, to play as you describe (taking out your mistakes like “getting stuck in feudal”), the ideal is a civilization with strong cavalry or a unit that you can beat everything without combining it with anything, the plan would be to defend, make economy and use all your resources in crushing with that unit, patrolling forward and letting them win for you. Archers are not the best option because you need to micro it and combine it with other units.
Options:
Byzantines: the defensive civilization par excellence. Do economy, put castles everywhere and go out with Catafractas full upgrades forward. At low levels it can work.
Bulgarians: you can play aggressive and defensive with it. They have very good feudal, but they also have a discount on TC’s, Krepost (small and cheaper castles), a very strong unit like the Konnic and a very good trash for imperial post. You can play some feudal, boom 4 tcs in castles, defend with krepost and go full konnic or hussar in imperial.
Cumans: similar to the Bulgarian, they have advantages that can be applied defensively or aggressively. you can bounce in feudal and go to castles with 3.4 stables to spam knights. they also have paladin in imperial.
Goths: basically, if the goths can reach imperial with excellent economy, they are invincible. The plan is “simple”: boom, get your two crowns in and spam huskarl + halbaldier. They are a civilization that is also aggressive in dark age and feudal. In low ELO it can work and you have a lot of fun watching them spam infinite husk 111
Mongols: Mangudai + siege rams/siege onagers (full upgrades) + hussar, one of the deadliest combos in the whole game. I know it’s contrary to what I said above about “no archers” or “one unit combos”, but it’s just that simply playing mangudai is so much fun 111
Poles: the best echo in the game. if you manage to make economy in feudal and early castles, you get the crown in and it’s practically gg. Infinite knight spam.

GuestPossibly something like teutons/byzantines/hindustanis should work. You can get some pretty strong units later in the game but you are limited either early on or in your ability to raid.
If you want to try some castle age timings another option is going with franks or burgundians with their cavaliers. You would have to close the game before you run out of gold though.

GuestKhmer are ideal for FFA.
Listen me out. You can ignore building requirements, so if you wont be attacked in feudal (its ffa, so you should be safe), you can pull off a rapid fast castle time. Even if your dark age is a mess, Khmer farmers will help you reach castle faster too.
You have one of the best early game defensive abilities, you can hide in houses.
Late game you go Ballista Elephant, which will vaporize almost everything. If you enjoy making a big army for an all out attack, this is *the* best deathball unit. Use your Hussars, fueled by your amazing farmers, to counter onagers, monks, and and to just be a meatshield. Food is infinite, gold is not, so use your hussars (or halbs, if you prefer) to protect your expensive elephants. Ideally you will have hundreds of hussars or halbs die, but keep your elephant army mostly alive the whole game.
Then just add trebs or rams if you are attacking defenses.
Just watchout for Mangudai and Maygar Hussar, but besides that if you can mass up like 40 ballista, I promise that you will not be lacking in lategame firepower.

GuestIn last man standing games there is less benefit for you to go out and attack others and so it favours defensive play. In normal ranked games this is not the case.
I recommend Teutons where you get some nice extra range castles and a ball of paladins then go crazy.
