I don’t play a lot of arena but a couple of days ago I had a really easy time stopping them with 2 tc 2 monasteries with bohemians(1.8k elo).
I had more organ guns than him at multiple times in the game xd.
Soo if you can pull off a monk defence, I suggest trying that as long as your civ has redemption.
Just ban arena it’s literal trash.
Gee, I wonder why giving an early eco bonus to the “Late game infinite eco win condition” civ caused them to become a meta-defining threat.
That said, Arena players are clowns.
You spaghetti drop the Portuguese player
Two things,
1)it’s an additional bonus as nothing was nerfed.
2)Many pros showed how to do the build and then the castle drop properly.
It’s mainly because they already had a good castle drop so giving them better early eco was what gave them such a high win rate, also they literally have no bad age, cheaper knights/crossbows, good eco during dark+feudal age and infinite resources in imp.
It’s not just castle drop organs, if you play meta, they are incredibly smooth. 6-8 scouts, even 10 then you can still click up at 17-18 mins, that with the horrible inefficiencies us 1.3k plaeyrs have in builds.
Edit: Just tried this on Hill Fort.
Random, don’t diss me pls; 50 vils, 6 stone, 6 food, rest gold/wood.
Army high was some 25~ organs.
Goths don’t have any answer to it.
Shouldn’t monks be a good counter?
There’s no counter?
Pick the even stronger arena civ, i.e.
the Turks!
The whole point of the bonus is allowing a 21-22 pop castle drop, meaning you will always be the first to get a castle and you dictate the pace of the game.
They’ve always had strong bonuses, you can do a single TC push and back it up with feitorias in imp, while not as strong as regular eco, if you can suddenly get a 20-40 vil boost in imp you can match the eco or even surpass the eco of whoever you are pressuring.
I do believe they need a slight nerf, but I also believe the tactic has counters (though some civs do not have an answer)
Perhaps no longer needing redemption to convert organ guns would make it a lot easier.
Yeah as others pointed out, it was supposed to be a civ with decent mid-game and pretty good late-game, provided you can get to it.
The problem was that people had trouble getting to it.
But now their early game eco bonus catapults them to Castle Age if you can boom freely, and have cheaper knights.
And even for going Feudal, since you need fewer vils on wood.
Also cheaper archers (civ bonus) and faster techs (team bonus).
This civ is bonkers atm and has everything, and makes me think of civs like Dravidians that don’t have enough.
Portoguese always (or at least in recent times) were “surprisingly bad for their bonuses”, because on paper they looked amazing.
In reality that didn’t matter because you started on the backfoot, but with the wood change that’s no longer the case and you can utilize all the things the civ has going for them.
And low level Arena is all about castle drops and UU spam.
Porto are now the best in that, so people pick them, but if they are nerfed again, then people will do the same with Turks …
