The reduced gold costs and faster tech research are really strong bonuses, but couldn’t really be used before, because you would fall back in Dark and early Feudal Age.
In that context I think the berry bonus is a bit too much.
Basically free 300 wood after berries are gone.
I would nerf the berry bonus by 33-50%.
In general I really like the bonus, because it doesn’t buff them to much on maps with dock start, as the berries come to play really late.

That is because you absolutely have to adapt to them, you must play their game, or you’ll lose.
That means taking into consideration that you’ll get castle dropped + organs, or petarded+organs.
You must add building layers to your wall, try to deny a castle drop, make mass redemption monk / strong UU to deny the first organ push, or scout if they don’t do a lot of units and fast imp.
Might be an hot take, but I believe feitoria is another option that makes this strat super strong.
A portuguese can go 1TC all-in, push with mass organ and by doing so ruining his eco, and still somehow catch up with you if you take down his castle and then start a small boom to push his base, just by build 3-4 feitorias in a few minutes.
They are worth ~27-36 vills, which is huge considering you don’t have to add TC or spend food to create them.
All of those elements blended together are a bit problematic to me.
They can go for an eco efficient ~14min castle time, push you with an unit that melt buildings and is hardly matched in early CA, can snipe repairing vills, and STILL not being that much punished if they fail because they are able to boom back quite fast with feitorias.
I only do okayish against them because I play burgundians a lot and Coutilliers are amazing defenders.
And they also have the option of not drop a castle at all and just boom while you are expecting organs gun and wasting resources.
TLDR : Portuguese are an issue because as the defender, you are not allowed to do any mistake, while they can do a ton of them and still be push you or boom back quickly.
February 12, 2023 at 1:37 am #11403dfectedROGuestwait, how did everyone counter organ guns before the buff to their eco?
why is everyone complaining now?
February 12, 2023 at 1:37 am #11402Economy_Snow_165GuestI think its a downside of wanting every civ to be solid on Arabia.
Portuguese weren’t great on Arabia before this buff.
The problem was they were solid to really good on a ton of other maps.
Now they’re good on Arabia and even better at their strong maps.
It would be the same issue if we buffed spanish.
February 12, 2023 at 1:37 am #11401PantheristGuestI’ve only played Portuguese on Arabia thus far and my god are they amazing and flexible.
I go to berries asap and push deer.
This lets me put off farms for Feudal and go for something like hyper-aggressive scouts.
Archer rush is also smooth.
I can see how even FC to knights is viable on closed maps if you can defend with walls and a tower.
One of my favourite civs now.
February 12, 2023 at 1:37 am #11400Top_Fuel_927GuestJust nerf organs a bit and they’re perfect.
February 12, 2023 at 1:37 am #11399HaslorGuestI think they can be nerfed a bit by reducing movement speed of organ guns so mangonels can do better against them without hurting their other options that are less OP.
