Here’s what me & my friends did to get ready for online competition:

    1) Beat the tutorial on hard.

    2) Get gold on all of the Art of War challenges.

    3) Beat campaigns on hard until you find a few civs you enjoy.

    4) Download Cicero’s build order mod

When you’re ready for online play do the following:

    1) Warm up with the Cicero mod, choose something simple like a scout or archer build.

Keep attempting it until you get a good grade.

2a) Get through the placement matches.

This is the hard part, once the 10 matches are done it’ll put you in an appropriate ELO bracket.

Be patient, take your L’s, it’ll get better trust me.

    2b) Play your matches.

Me & my friends do a best of 7.

    3) Watch all of your replays, analyze what you did well & what you can do better.

    4) Check out your stats online.

Find what civs/maps you’re good at, and what you’re not good at.

    5) Rince & Repeat

Seems like a lot, but it’s worth it.

We all have 60%+ win rates.

Using this method we’ve been able to go from as low as 700 ELO to 1100 ELO+ in just a few months.

    Play ranked.

That way if you’re really bad, you’ll be matched with people who are also really bad.

    There is no risk!

    You should be.

You will join a “noob” lobby and then you will realize how bad you really are.

Maybe watch T90s Low Elo Legends series, you will get to know that people actually make a lot of mistakes, which might reduce your anxiety.

Also, you will get to learn what not to do so a Win-Win.

    Queue up for Ranked.

    Do it.

Drink half a beer if you need an excuse for yourself that you will not perform to your best, if that’s your thing.

Yes you will lose – no shame in it and no biggie.

It’s a stranger on the internet, you will be surprised how little they care.

    Then keep going.

The ranked ladder has an ELO system, so after a while you will play against people similar to your level.

Play a ton of campaigns until you are familiar with the basics of the game.

Try the art of war tutorials, a couple of skirmishes vs the hard ai.

Be prepared to lose a lot until you find your right Elo.

If you wanna give it a shot:

    1.

play the art of war camping
    2.

Don’t play lobby (many smurfs usw)
    3.

    Checkout some build orders
    4.

Prepare to lose before reaching your ELO and matchup against ppl of your level

Maybe focus on 1 to 3 civs first before going random civ.

Good luck and keep in mind you’re just losing some points in an online game when you lose, no big deal.

Remember that multiplayer is more scared of you than you of it!

Seriously though, play the game the way it is enjoyable to you.

There’s no shame in preferring campaigns and AI battles, competitive ranked is just one of many ways to enjoy the game.

But if you really want to play on ranked just listen to the suggestions the good folk have provided here: play art of war, learn some basic build order and practice efficiency against AI.

When you feel ready jump to 1v1 ranked to experience how a human player plays, at the very least so you’d learn to watch out for various forms of early raids since AI isn’t as sneaky as human player can be.

Also, don’t worry about sucking, elo exists for a reason.

It’s not a number you must raise at all cost, it’s a number that allows game to match you with another player of a similar skill.

Start is rough but once you get to your true elo you won’t be matched against some crazy pro that can play blindfolded.

Well, in 1v1 at least, team games might be a bit more chaotic.

    1.

Do the Art of War tutorials and aim for Silver (except Naval, screw that one, it’s just ridiculous)
    2.

Download “Interactive Build Order Guide” from the mod browser and practice the first two BOs (should be Scout Rush and Archer Rush)
    3.

    Download a small trees mod.

There are many out there, so choose one that looks best for you.

It’ll help you to spot holes in your base
    4.

Make a habit of using hotkeys for the most common stuff in the game (go to TC, queue up villagers, build houses, place farms etc) – the Hotkey trainer from the mod browser also helps you practicing your reactions to building hotkeys.
    5.

Watch your replays, see what you did vs what your opponent did and maybe try to learn from your opponent’s moves
    6.

Just play and don’t mind loosing.

We’ve all been there and there’s always room for improvement 🙂

Id actually say ranked is LESS scary than you think.

Once you lose a bunch your ranking score (elo) will match you up against players of similar skill and it wont feel anywhere near as bad.

Lobbys are a mix amd you can just get steam rolled but ranked will match you with appropriate match ups which is what you want.

Just be aware you start at 1000 elo and might need to lost 10 games to get to the right elo (500?) But yoi can learn along the way and just have fun and dont take it too seriously.

Start with William Wallace and Joan of arc to learn the very basics (what is a town center?).

After that play art of war to learn counters, tactics, booming and your first build order.

When you complete that you can learn/search up build orders and practice against the skirmish ai, up the difficulty for every win.

Some time after watch hera, survivalist and other aoe channels for tips and read on reddit/make more posts like this for help.

Finally try out quick play/custom lobbies or even ranked team games (everyone is bad there) before if you’re still scared, don’t be afraid to lose elo/games (everyone has) and be civil as in surrender when you are obviously gonna die rather than hide vills, say gg, glhf etc.

There’s also a build order guide by Cicero on the mods tab (go to options to see it by clicking the gear)

Worst that can happen is you lose and losing is part of life.

First step to not sucking most of the time.

If you want tips then learn a build order or two that’s geared towards aggression in feudal.

Learn some hot keys and learn a couplec civs (pick one archer civ and one horse civ).

    Communicate with your team.

Watch some t90 vids and spirit of the law vids.

All your games get recorded so rewatch them after a lose or as a pre start warm up.

Take notes (you do that in school for a reason.

If Leonardo Di Vinci had to take notes so do you).

    Find people to play with.

Some pros will do lessons for a fee but some non pros will do it for free.

Dm me if you want to play a match some time.

I’m not great but i can share what i know.

I would say the best way if you are scared (I was terrified as well I admit hehehe) would be to contact a higher level player for coaching to accompany you through the first games.

I know some people would find it silly but I felt exactly the same as you did, and did so that way and was so refreshing!

It’s tough for some introvert people even if we don’t know who the opponent is to appear “in public”.

If that’s your case, then that would be my advice since it worked for me.

There is a member here which posted some time ago offering classes which I contacted and had a blast of a time (His name is Oladushek a 1.9k elo player) but I can’t find the post to link it here. 100% would recommend him.
