I am unable to get Age of Empires II to start up on Steam today.
When I try to launch the game, it appears to load for a few moments before the button reverts back to ‘Play’ and nothing happens.
Is anyone else having this issue?
Could the console launch be causing this?
same
same.
Win 7.
can’t play
Same.
Win7, steam cloud sync, then no Bueno.
Same, w7 broken now
Same issue for me
I tried to fire it up this afternoon.
Steam downloaded a new VC Redistributable package, which I assume fixes the problem for those with current OS versions. (Edit: fixes for those who didn’t care to do the manual workaround given here yesterday.)
Unfortunately, it did not affect the symptom on Windows 7 — so I expect we’re done.
Yep Im having the same problem.
At least it’s a shared issue then so I’m sure there will be a hotfix soon.
Same here, vcruntime140_1.dll error.
Anyone has the same?
Me too, anyone know the fix?
Same here.
Adter update doesn’t launch anymore.
Sad times
same issue here, i cant play in win7 anymore…. 🙁
My error (from running AoE2DE_s) is:

The procedure entry point CreateFile2 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll

This would suggest that they have dropped support for Windows 7, as that call was new for Windows 8.
I hope that I am wrong.
Hey, my brother was having this same issue.
After some troubleshooting and googling of the error message (you can see the actual error message if you navigate to your Steam folder and try running the AOE2 .exe from there) we found the solution.
Basically it’s an issue with Microsoft C++.
To resolve go here – [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170) and download and install these:

Hope that helps.
