Troubleshooting AMD Freezing Crashes

I’ve been playing the game online and have noticed that it tends to crash when I’m using my Alienware monitor, which has a maximum refresh rate of 240hz.

To try to fix this issue, I enabled Freesync and checked the AMD app, which showed that Age of Empires 2 doesn’t really like refresh rates above 144hz.

To solve the problem, I set the refresh rate on both my monitor and in-game to 144hz and so far, after playing five games, there have been no crashes or freezes and the game runs faster.

I also made sure not to check the box for vsync and I’m playing on low settings.

If you have had a similar experience, please let me know.

I have been having a glitch recently where the game continues (I know that because the sounds progress as usual), but the screen freezes.

I have to alt tab in and out, then the graphics speed up until they catch up with real time.

No other fix that I know of as of now.

I have an AMD GPU and CPU and a Freesync monitor.

Not sure if this issue and the issue you’re having are connected somehow.

    5800X3D, 170hz monitor.

I tone it down to 144 when playing age and never have had any issues

How do you change the game to 140hz?

    Just for reference
    Cpu Ryzen 4700g
    GPU red devil rx5700xt
    Mb aorus b450 pro wifi
    56gb 2666 ram
    Alienware 240hz monitor

Game freezes mid game to early game, sounds still play in background as well as hotkey sounds tcs, barracks, ect.

Sometimes turning monitor on and off allows the game to speed up quickly to real time, most times the PC needs turned off to un freeze.

Recently I’ve kept freesync on but changed both monitor and in game Hz to 144 this has worked better for me so far.

I also set aoe2 to highest priority in task manager.I noticed at 240hz the game never gets above 144fps so my theory is that setting it too high messes it up somehow.

I will update if it starts having symptoms again.
