Tips for Avoiding Resignation in the Face of Defeat

As a new player who recently got back into the game after watching T90, I absolutely love Age of Empires.

However, I’ve noticed that when I get rushed and lose a few units, I tend to give up and resign.

I feel like my only shot at winning is being the first to drop a castle in my opponent’s base.

Perhaps if I knew more about unit counters, I would have a better chance of staying in the game.

I struggle to come back after my economy is hit and find myself wasting resources in the market for upgrades and new units.

I enjoy playing the game when I’m winning, but I need to learn how to be a better loser.

Don’t give up because you suffered one setback.

some things are visible like: do you have additional troops elsewhere?

If so, then you might still be in the hunt.

Some factors are less visible, such as economic standing.

You may have lost the battle, but your opponent could be stretched to the breaking point and unable to follow up on the advantage they gained by winning a battle.

I think this is the biggest argument for counterattacking when you feel most vulnerable.

Generally if you are really hard-pressed then your opponent is after you with everything he has and is unprotected somewhere else.

Too often human behavior says to hunker down and weather the storm via 100% of effort going to defense, but counter raiding is a great way to reduce pressure on your own defenses.

Often times when you take damage it’s actually kinda over if you’re not much better than your opponent.

Try to make counter damage somehow as quick as possible and if that not works out and you seem very behind, resigning is reasonable.

    No shame about it.

One of the key basics of the game is to avoid damage by good scouting and preparing defenses in advance.

Optimally in the form of army that you can also use for attacking.

    Or just make damage first.

    The right Mindset.

    If you lose but……

    – the points are still close,
    – you have Map Controll throught buildings/walls
    – you lategame comb is better
    – you both lost an the army

    Dont surrender.

You’re right about learning unit counters.

Before resigning I will usually ask myself a set of questions relating to the situation.

Can I tech into/assemble an effective counter to this army in a reasonable time?

Would 2-3 or three lucky knights into the eco create enough chaos to stop the momentum?

Can I otherwise catch my opponent off guard with an unexpected play? (Castle drop, off-meta units etc)

Is there an exploitable weakness in their game plan that I have overlooked?

Is there a fixable weakness in my own game plan that I have overlooked?

Honestly it’s almost always worth giving something a go, because a bit of luck or a simple mistake can snowball into a win from anywhere.

    Especially at amateur elo

No matter how bad you are (except the lower 2%), you’ll win roughly 50% of the games.

No matter how good you are (except the higher 2%), you’ll win roughly 50% of the games.

If you lost, that means a win is coming ahead.

If you lost 4 in a row, you have 4 wins ahead. (maybe not in a row, but you get the point) The matchmaking makes it so.

I don’t know if this helps you.

It sure as hell helps me.

When I lose I get kinda happy that I have a win coming.

Sometimes you can be late and rushed and still actually have a good comeback.

Just recently in one game I misclicked aging and was still in dark age having my fishing ships torn up, but was able to come back.

Another on Budapest I lost about 10 vils in 10 mins but knew I had a better eco as I took loads of sheep and was constantly making villagers.

At the lower end of play often the micro with scouts/archers etc to kill your guys means they aren’t doing much to their eco, so if you can limit the damage they do to you then you might actually be ahead in villagers.

Also the civ matchup is important.

Are you stronger as you go?

    Weaker as you go?

    Chill, don’t worry so much.

Just stop clicking for a moment, think about your strategy, see if it works out or just resign to play better next time.

I played a game today where I clearly won, economy, military and map control.

My salty opponent kept making stables and sent one or two unupgraded light cav towards my base for 20 minutes, never resigned.

I got bored and resigned, let him have the points, I won the game anyway, saved my time.

Don’t care about elo or criticism, just check your resources, map control, score difference and game plan before you decide to resign.

You don’t need “advice” on this topic, just be a reasonable opponent.

A lot of AOE 2 is about tradeoffs…

early aggression often means the player has a weaker economy behind it, etc.

That’s especially true for lower elos, where players aren’t as good at multi-tasking.

So behind their army that they’ve spent the last 10 minutes micro’ing in your base, they may have a bunch of idle villagers and forgot to queue up more villagers.

What might help is taking a look at the replays of your games where you resigned and see just how strong your opponent’s economy is, particularly if it’s a game where you were rushed early and felt like it would be impossible to come back.

Another piece of advice I would give is don’t resign if you have more than 1000 of any resource.

Use the market to balance your resources then:

    * raise a new force
    * drop more production buildings
    * buy a defensive castle
    * keep your eco pumping

Keep playing and learning my friend, I also play on xbox.

If you want easier games I reccommend turning crossplay off and turn off mouse and keyboard.

This way you only play against players on controller.

Yes, watch your replays after a loss or a good game.

    Compare that with youtube videos.

You will get alot of tips for helping your eco on youtube.

Mine would be; Keep villagers qued as frequent as possible in TC, once aging to fuedal begin walling (wood or stone) and focus on the resources you need with two buildings required to age up, try to get to a quick castle then you need to add another TC or two.

Personally I seperate my TC’s by gates in case I do get ECO raided, at least one TC is still operating.

don’t forget you can garrison your troops or vills with the X button on controller.

Watch some of the recent Survivalist coaching videos for the lower elo.

There’s so many times that a position looks lost and they’re able to make a convincing comeback

To be honest at low skill levels (where I am at) anything can happen.

My suggestion is don’t resign until it’s clearly over, specially if you want to get better.

However everything has shades of grey and if you don’t feel like fighting back hard for a 10% chance of winning then just don’t do it and start a new game.

    It’s ok.
