Hasn’t been mentioned yet, but Boyars are pretty good.
They are like Teutonic Knights but can actually catch things.
The go-to unique units in castle age are both ranged and faster than knights with a low frame delay (meaning they respond fast to your commands).
I.E cavalry archer UU like Conqs and Mangudai.
Otherwise, quite a lot of the time you’re better off going for xbows or knights rather than an archer UU or cavalry UU.
Also some UU are expensive so you might struggle to afford them until the late game.
Cataphracts and war elephants if they can mass them are probably the strongest units in aoe2.
But they’re hard to mass due to their expense.
It depends on the time frame.
If you want the steepest power spike, then conquistadors and arambai are your best options. 3-4 conquistadors with micro are enough to kill knights in a couple of shots.
In the long term, if you can field a large mass of units, mangudai, organ guns and ballista elephants are nearly unstoppable
The typical answer for your 2nd question would be “it depends.” 11
For example, if you’re playing 2v2 Arabia and your opponent(s) know how to execute and coordinate early aggression well you might be punished swiftly before even reaching Castle Age.
If you’re playing 2v2 Arena it’s safer and more common to Fast Castle (also known as FC), but if you go for a forward castle drop to pressure an opponent it’d be best to delay your extra TCs until after you’ve done some damage.
TLDR: It depends on both the map you’re playing and your opponents’ playstyles.
Best castle age UU is probably the conq, but quite micro intensive so idk how it’d work on console.
Post imp, Mangudai are probably the strongest UU you can realistically get to.
Persian elite war elephant is simply too expensive and hard to mass.
Spanish -conqs, Portugese -organ guns, Turks – janniseries, Koreans – war wagons
Those are the ones that i hate playing against.
There are also Leitis, Tatar UU, burgundian UU that are also quite strong but usually need a bit more of them than the first group.
Spanish Conquistadors are pretty good out of the gate – 2 base armor and 16 attack, so you only need a few to start raiding and they have pretty good matchups against most Castle Age units, though they fall off a bit in Imperial.
Portuguese Organ Guns are deceptively hard to counter if you get them in sufficient numbers early enough, but they are slow so you’ll want to castle drop.
Turkish Janissaries are also quite strong and have high range for Castle Age (outranging Mangonels and Crossbows).
Ethiopian Shotel Warriors have high attack but low HP, so if you can open your enemy’s base they are good at raiding but you need to be careful with them.
Essentially you’re looking for a unit that is good even without many upgrades if you’re doing a fast castle into UU.
These are just a few examples that would work well in what’s considered a “rush”.
