Greetings!
Can anyone provide advice on what the strongest defense line would be?
I’m referring to walls, towers, castles, and any other structures that could be used.
It should be able to withstand an attack from a ranged army, cavalry, infantry, and trebuchets.
Cost and time to build are not an issue, as long as the defense line is impenetrable.

February 17, 2023 at 7:02 pm #13320Fit-Class-8755GuestBohemias have access to the houfnice which are expensive and better BBC’s.
Saracens have really good trebs and Siege Onagers (for siege rams) thanks to their UT, as well as BBC.
The Tartar trebuchets have the most range in the game.
Any static defense will get beat by a treb/BBC.

February 17, 2023 at 7:02 pm #13324awkwardcartographyGuestIf you really want to go total turtle, no attacking, full defenses all the way then the civ you want is Turks!
Their bombard towers deal 120 damage per shot, and have 13 range after you research their unique tech “Artillery” which means they will kill enemy bombard cannons that are attacking them.
They also have 14-range bombard cannons, which you can poke out from underneath your impenetrable bombard tower line to kill enemy trebuchets!
Remember to research all the archer attack upgrades at the blacksmith (fletching, bodkin arrow, and bracer) to improve your defenses and research the other important university upgrades (fortified wall for wall hp, masonry and architecture for building hp, ballistics to improve your defenses, and of course bombard towers themselves).
AOE2 isn’t really that suited to the tower-defense type strategies but it’s certainly possible to play it and have fun.

February 17, 2023 at 7:02 pm #13326TomomirGuestPick bombard cannon civ and build following defense line: line of walls at front, followed by line of bombard towers/castles 5 tiles from the wall (so you can snipe trebs that are attacking your towers and still be behind the walls) and lastly another line of walls behind the towers.
It’s not bulletproof, but it works quite well.
February 17, 2023 at 7:02 pm #13327January_6_2021GuestIf you really want an impenetrable static defense:
Play oasis, pick turks, go fast imp, chop/treb cut to middle asap, and then spam cannon galleons.
Upgrade to elite asap and get artillery.
Nothing land based can compete with your 17 range army.
Keep it on stand ground in the center of the pond, and you can always destroy any enemy attempts to dock or threaten your ships.
Congratulations, you have a 100% impossible to breach defended area, and the game will continue until you (or your opponent) gives up and resigns.
This may also work on certain other water maps (certain nomad generations have a pond in the middle), but they key is you need to be able to control all of the shoreline so your opponent can’t dock/make navy, without being close enough to shore yourself you can be attacked.
You 100% will lose land going for this though; this defense can’t help protect eco, production buildings, wonders, relics, or anything else, so make sure relic and wonder victories are off.
