someone posted this fix on aoezone and it worked for me:

If you have a smurf account with mods and you haven’t logged in yet, go to the folder where mods are saved and you can copy them.

    This is the route:
    C:\Users\**your username**\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\**your smurf steamId number**\mods\subscribed
You can copy those files to your main account’s local mod folder so you don’t lose them.

    It has worked for me.

    C:\Users\**your username**\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\**your main acc steamId number**\mods\local

I solved this problem like this.

subscribed to mods again and without leaving the game transferred files from the subscribed folder to the local folder

    Yup, mods unsubbing randomly.

Restarting the game results in more mods disappearing.

    Not great at all.

“Upside down menu background” is being really pesky and keeps re-installing itself.

And 50% of my other mods are just gone.

    Same here.

Every time I reload up the game it unsubscribes 2 or 3 random mods

And here I was scrolling down to see what happened to the moderators of this subreddit….

Yes it was a long day.

But you’re right I definitely lost some of those Mods.

We’re investigating this issue, in the meantime I recommend you to do a temporary fix.

Before you launch the game, please make a copy of mod-status.json file, this can be found here:

    C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\YOUR_STEAM_ID\mods\mod-status.json

You should also copy your mods to /local.

Mods default folder is: C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\YOUR_STEAM_ID\mods\subscribed

Copy the folders found there in:

    C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\YOUR_STEAM_ID\mods\local

    YES.

    Holy f***, what a mess.

Played a game earlier and everything was fine, reopened recently and boom, got unsubscribed from a bunch of mods, some of them I could find again but some aren’t working properly.

Some others seem to have disappeared completely.

Also, the in-game mod browser is not loading the lists properly.

Thought it was only me :/

[EDIT]Update/Clarification: Turns out the mods work just fine, and you should be able to find them if you remember the names.

However every time you load the game some will unsubscribe randomly.

And the mod browser is still buggy (at least for me).

At the moment to have the mods not disappear you to need to resubscribe, then after that close the game, and go to
    C:\Users\(Your username)\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\(some numbers)\mods\
and copy the folders from the “subscribed” folder to the “local” one.

You might get some duplicates, of which you can obviously disable the ‘subscribed’ one and keep the local on.

No idea what is going on.

But supposedly some official mods are causing crashes to desktop.

They might be trying to figure out which ones.

Also, I have experienced the crashes to desktop before I disabled some mods.
