    Pros.
    – Two handed swordsman are much more effective in castle age and are a true third option.
    – its easier to get to champions in imp
    – have enough counters in castle age

    Contra.
    – tradition
    – against non archer civs they are very strong
    – the upgrades might be to cheap

Imagine Malian or Japanese 2hs in castle age.

I don’t think it’s impossible forcing 2hs into castle age, but there will likely need to be some accompanying changes (nerfs to those civs and/or nerfs to 2hs)

As always, anyone that suggests anything should actually have a vague idea of the impact , maybe even run a test on the aoe sim or editor

Currently 20 Japanese LS beat 10 knights with about 10 loses with 2hs that drops to about 5 losses.

ie they become a very hard counter to knights.

Whereas Malian 2hs go from killing xbows in 4 hits to 3.

Becoming a realistic ounter to archers, while still being cost effective Vs knights.

Definetely agree that one of the militia-line upgrades should be cut out.

Longsword or 2hs and tweak the remaining stats accordingly.

    Counter idea-

Leave the structure of the champion line as-is (legacy reasons)
BUT, when you reach castle, MAA researches automatically, and when you reach imp longsword researches automatically.

Could be for certain civs or all.

I think this could address the issues of champion line being too hard to tech into….

Opposite, but stats on two handed swordsmen should be on longswords.

Looks cooler to have infantry with shields than armies of infantry using two handed swords

I think the better way would be to make all the upgrades available on age earlier at double price, but the price halves every age.

So in Dark Age you can research M@A for 2x price.

In Feudal: M@A for 1x, Longsword for 2x price.

In Castle: M@A for 1/2, Longsword for 1x, TH for 2x price.

In Imperial: M@A for 1/4, Longsword for 1/2, TH for 1x, Champion for 1x price.

This would make teching into them easier, while also allowing the army comp to get more powerful later in the age.

There should probably be something similar for the research times as well.

How about 10 attack for Longswords as a starting point instead?

Im pretty sure in the beta the militia and men at arms were a seperate line from longswords etc.

They were like clubmen/axemen in aoe1 only costing food.

I dont think the devs would ever go that route but it would have been interesting to see.
