The only real-time strategy game I have ever played online is Age of Mythology, mainly in custom scenarios.
Recently I watched someone playing a 4v1 match, and they were incredibly skilled, navigating the game with precision and using hotkeys like a pro.
Even though they were an expert, their chat was still something I couldn’t comprehend.
My style of playing is much different, I prefer to take my time and build up my defenses and troops before attacking, almost like a role-playing game.
I’m wondering if I should try this game online, or if it’s only for people with a good knowledge of the game mechanics.
Will I just get crushed by the experts?
I’m looking to have fun, not to dominate the leaderboards.
Should I stay away from multiplayer altogether?
I’m looking for a competitive but not overly-harsh experience.

February 2, 2023 at 6:44 am #7939_genadeGuestRanked multiplayer uses a matchmaking system that automatically matches you up against players with a similar rating.
If you play ranked and your rating is accurate, you will experience fun games with like-minded people.
However, your rating starts out as average, which is much higher than what fits your actual skill level, so you will first need to lose about 20 games in order for your rating to drop sufficiently for you to get balanced matches.
I recommend starting out by playing 1v1 and then branching out to teamgames once your rating has settled at a good spot, lest you get teammates who will be (correctly) complaining that they lose the game because of you.

February 2, 2023 at 6:44 am #7937Upper-Preparation-76GuestThe sweat is real in Aoe2 online, I will say though that there is a vast player base and most people find that once they get to a realistic elo they have mostly fun and balanced games.
I say give it a go, but be prepared to lose for probably 10-20 straight games before finding that sweet spot in the player base for your skill level.

February 2, 2023 at 6:44 am #7935kastabortkontodeluxeGuestOf course!
I was in the same position a year back.
I say just try it, and go for ranked, not lobby games.
Prepare yourself to get stomped the first couple of games, and eventually you’ll reach a point where you’ll get matched with people with similar skills at a lower ELO.
Once there, it gets more fun and you’ll win about 50% of your games there 🙂
February 2, 2023 at 6:44 am #7934leading_suspectGuestAre you content playing vs.
the AI, or do you want to try vs.
people?
The nice thing about the ELO system is if you want to play relaxed, play relaxed.
Your elo will reflect that and you won’t play vs.
super sweaty people (generally).
You start at 1000 elo and have to play 10 games to find your rank.
You will likely lose a bunch of games, but don’t get discouraged.
Once you find your natural elo you’ll be winning about half your games and playing vs.
people with your same skill level.
Personally its my favorite part of aoe2!
February 2, 2023 at 6:44 am #7933Data-AdvancedGuestI play online, and I suck!
It took me a LONG time before I became comfortable with even the idea of playing online.
I only discovered the game within the last year, and have played through many of the campaigns having a great time beating the computer.
I finally decided I wanted to try online, and it’s been a blast!
I’m at about 800 ELO right now and lose against anyone > 900 every time, but even then, it’s still fun!
Once you lose enough you come down to scrub level, where I am, and it becomes really fun.
If you are both terrible, then you and your opponent will both have a blast.

Think of it like playing chess against a friend – you don’t care that you both suck compared to magnus carlsen, it’s still fun.

As someone who only started playing online within the last week, I highly recommend.
February 2, 2023 at 6:44 am #7932Sideways_X1GuestDo it!
It’s super fun and I’d love to crush some games with you and help if I can.
I’m a 20 year retread on the game and am probably settling around 700 elo
February 2, 2023 at 6:44 am #7931Internal_Judgment687GuestYou can join lobbies tagged as “ultimate noobs only” or “total noobs that have no idea what they are doing” etc.
So you can actually have a chance of playing with real noobs this way.
All the others are tryhards.
BTW lobbies are unranked so you can do w/e you want and eventually die in a more hilarious way.
February 2, 2023 at 6:44 am #7929Practical_Science_28GuestCheck Spirit of the law and Hera’s youtube channel, they made some really good intro videos about multiplayer for beginners.
Learn some basic build orders/micro/macro tips, you’ll enjoy pvp a lot more

Alright

>came to aoe2 to get away from the sweat lordsif this is the language you use in regards to competence, then i think the problem is with your mentality and not my level of perspiration
that said, we have an elo system.
if you like playing simcitybuilder, then you will get shit on for your first roughly 20 games.
at which point, if you dont get disheartened, your elo will drop enough where you will meet equally skilled opponents.
judging by LEL videos, some of them use hotkeys, some dont.
some know build orders, some dont.
somehave small trees, some dont.
most will not pressure you early and you can build up your army in imp.
February 2, 2023 at 6:44 am #7927supervoegliGuesthmm i guess part of playing competitively is getting comfortable with losing 50% of your games.
if that is “harsh” for you, you probably better stay away from it.
and since you start out with a pretty high rating, you will have to deal with 10-20 losses until you are placed at “your” spot on the ladder, which might be pretty low from what you describe.
February 2, 2023 at 6:44 am #7926Zyklon00GuestHow do you fare against the AI?
Can you win against hardest or extreme AI?
If you can comfortably win vs extreme AI, you will probably get some wins when you start playing online.
If not, you can expect to lose matches until you are at your correct elo.
How many matches it takes depends on how good you actually are.
Have you ever played custom scenario’s?
I always found them a great way to enjoy the game very casually online.
