Scouts are a very forgiving unit to play, making them especially suitable for newer players like me.
They are highly mobile, and don’t die quickly if run under a Town Center, allowing players to avoid fights they can’t win.
In early feudal, they can take out almost any unit apart from spears, and even then, if you commit to scouts, it is possible to overwhelm a single spear at a low cost.
Defending against scouts is a challenge for lower level players.
One must decide between building spears, small walls, or full walls, while also being careful not to lose their own units to the Town Center or the scout army.
Any mistakes in microing one’s own army, failure to track the scout army, or holes in the wall can lead to huge losses with minimal effort from the opponent.
At higher levels, players can manage these challenges, meaning scouts are balanced.
However, for lower level players, it can be quite frustrating.
If one can hold on, they are likely to win, as many players rely on the scout rush, and have no follow up plan.
I believe that a player who can execute a scouts into knights build order effectively can easily reach a 1v1 elo of 1100 or higher with minimal skill.
This build order is nearly unbeatable for beginner players unless they mirror it.

Start walling your resources and placing spears in parts of your eco in pairs.
February 15, 2023 at 3:23 pm #12646Urc0mpGuestThere are probably some things that don’t balance well on both ends of the curve but I think you might be running into better players.
Low level scouts players idle the heck out of them, accidentally take spear fights they don’t want, run them into TC or whatever.
It takes a fair bit of micro to get value out of scouts.

I wouldn’t assume they have perfect scout micro especially at that elo.
February 15, 2023 at 3:23 pm #12648TheConqueror753GuestIf they have no ability to adapt or transition, why not spam spears?
Maybe go Pike Mangonel?
Maybe Camels later if you have them, or Monks in some situations?
February 15, 2023 at 3:23 pm #12649BlockliesGuestNever had a problem against scouts, I naturally build houses near resource camps to resource wall and add 2 spears to defend.
Send in the archers and get vill kills while they don’t, I’m not even high elo either, ~950 now and was ~800 before.
Strategy and macro are the most important things, nobody is getting to 1100 elo by spamming knights and scouts exclusively.
They don’t need balancing but if they are too problematic at low elo then just make the art of war better with it focusing on different kinds of walls, why feudal pressure and early castle times are important and how pikes don’t counter knights but monks do.

Just don’t let that spear chase to much.

wrong, they die to MaA (and also camel scouts but that’s just one civ)
but at lower levels yeah, MaA + archers are harder to play so hurr durr scouts -> knights is the best strategy.
I’m 15xx and many of my wins comes from literally beating these jabronis!

Scouts opening has the highest winrate on high elo games too.
