Running Age of Empires II on Raspberry Pi 4 with Wine/Box86

I recently discovered that Age of Empires/Conquerors (AOE/C) can be installed, run, and played on a Raspberry Pi 4 using the Raspberry Pi OS operating system.

All you need to do is install Box86, grab a few installation files from WineHQ, install Winetricks, and then run Winetricks Directplay to install AOE/C 2.

I have done this many times and it is very easy.

I have been searching all over the internet for a solution to an issue I am having with multiplayer games.

Whenever I try to play a multiplayer internet/IP game, I get an out of sync error after one minute.

I found a solution on Reddit ([https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/dwuplr/how\_to\_run\_age\_of\_empires\_2\_definitive\_edition\_on/](https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/dwuplr/how_to_run_age_of_empires_2_definitive_edition_on/)), but it didn’t work because the VC Redist file from the download link in the post can’t be extracted.

I then found another thread ([https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/oefx7w/aoe2\_de\_on\_linux\_out\_of\_sync\_in\_multiplayer/](https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/oefx7w/aoe2_de_on_linux_out_of_sync_in_multiplayer/)), which suggested getting the VC Redist from the game folder, but this was referring to AOE2 DE which I don’t have.

Can anyone help me figure out how to get multiplayer working for AOE2 (original) running on Wine/Box86 on Raspberry Pi OS running on a Raspberry Pi 4?

Most people here are playing DE not the original, let alone trying to make it work on linux with rpi.

You probably have better chances asking on the forum on the windows emulation you are using and Hope someone is willing to dig into it.

    Hi!

Have a look at [this section](https://aoe2.arkanosis.net/linux/#aoe2_de_online_multiplayer) for the updated link for a vc redist you can use to fix synchronization issues in multiplayer (at least in DE).

The link you’ve found used to work (and it did for years), but Microsoft changed the file at some point.

Also, I’m really impressed you’ve managed to run AoC on a rpi.

How much RAM do you have on it?

I’m very tempted to try it too, but I only have a 3B+ with 1 GiB of RAM (that’s well above the hardware requirements, but I’m not sure how big the box86+wine overhead is).

Edit: wait, you’ll need a 32 bits vc redist, won’t you?
