My opponent walled off his resources and sent out a large number of knights to attack me.
I tried to scout out his base and advance my build order as quickly as possible, but he was able to progress faster than me.
He was able to hit my wood lines and I attempted to counter with spears and knights.
Unfortunately, there were too many knights to stop.
Looking back, I considered switching to stone and building a tower on his gold, or making archers.
However, I believed that switching to those units would have put me even further behind.
I ended up making spears and upgrading them with pike, but I should have waited until I had enough spears with the upgrade before engaging in battle.
January 26, 2023 at 5:13 pm #4622FuturalisGuestIf they are FC’ing, then you need to do damage and/or deny their easy expansion.
So you could either wall up and transition to Castle Age, taking advantage of keeping his knights out while you can deny TCs and new vills going to res that aren’t under the TC.
More likely, you could indeed have towered their gold or sent archers to it.
You should be able to take them off gold before they reach Castle Age, and you should be able to deny the second stable as well (assuming the first one is already up).
They can’t make many knights when kicked off gold, and a bunch of archers and scouts can handle the first knights one-by-one.
They certainly won’t have +2 armor.
After that, it should be a miserable game for them, being denied off resources and unable to take advantage in Castle Age.
Arguably, they are dead even if you don’t click Castle Age yourself.
Of course, if you somehow let them get 2 stables up with steady gold supply, your feudal army dies to 4 knights.
Btw, the main reason to add archers instead of a tower is that they need spears to re-establish map control in their own base to drop the 2nd stable and such.
If you have archers out, they can’t reclaim their own space and gold.
January 26, 2023 at 5:13 pm #4623total_score2GuestAs soon as the FC happened with you dealing no economic damage it was gg.
Forget about how to counter the knights etc, it doesn’t matter.
Spears and pikes don’t counter knights anyway until in massive numbers, you lost the game in feudal none of that matters.
You have to tower the berries, then they will lose access to berries (which will legit be like half of their food income at that point) and all those vills small walled there have to run, now your scouts can kill at least 2 or 3 if you micro properly (blocking them from reaching the TC).
Then tower the gold after that probably.
January 26, 2023 at 5:13 pm #4624BlockliesGuestAgainst a fast castler archers and towers are the way to go, forcing him to go on stone early and undermining his walls.
If he does reach castle age but you haven’t you should stone wall and try to get up because the knights are coming.
Spears are terrible against cavalry unless you’re in imperial age so stone wall and later go for monks to convert his knights then later go on your own raids.
January 26, 2023 at 5:13 pm #4625da_m_n_aoeGuestEither go for an archer transition in feudal or go full scouts and go tower your opponents base.
Also if you have a civ with good early eco oftentimes you can just stop after 1 or 2 additional scouts and go up yourselves, you should only be a minute behind.
January 26, 2023 at 5:13 pm #4626laguardia528GuestScouts are a mistake when your opponent is walled.
It slows down your castle time and can’t do any significant damage before his castle age power spike comes through.
If he walled close to his resources then archers or towers can punish that choice, or you can try to wall up your own base and go castle age as well.
Fighting knights with spears is honestly a mistake, even in larger numbers you’re never going to take a “good” fight.

January 26, 2023 at 5:13 pm #4628blast2pastGuestGenerally you punish FC by dealing damage in early castle or ideally in feudal age.
Now, let’s say you idled your army and didn’t do anything to deal damage and all of a sudden you see castle age hit for your opponent
At this point, if I haven’t already big walled, I small wall all my important resources. Then I focus on getting up to castle ASAP.
If my opponent doesn’t apply pressure during this time, I know I have to be aggressive in castle if I want a chance of catching up since they’re probably on 2/3TC.
This also applies if they only apply minimal pressure (this means they sent a handful of knights, and not a flood).
My go-to strat for early game castle pressure is 3 stable knights, I set up my eco aggressively for this, putting minimal on wood and moving everyone to farms and gold.
I’ve been testing 3 Archery Range CA instead lately and that’s been good too.
Now, let’s say they turn on the gas and try win with aggression.
You’re heavily reliant on your walls here, stone wall if necessary.
Small walls are good for melee units but obviously don’t work against xbow.
If against Knights, your goal is to keep them out of your eco while you make spears and eventually monks to defend.
Minimizing damage is your goal here.
Against xbow, you gotta keep moving vills and keep them alive.
They are better alive and not working than dead.
Once you get to castle tho, you got heaps of viable options that can deal with xbow.
Knights massed, skirms massed, siege.
I’m super stoned while writing this so I feel like I went on a rant, hopefully it’s helpful.
January 26, 2023 at 5:13 pm #4629Scoo_ByGuestAdd archers to scouts build.
Break in and camp their gold with archers.
Add towers to woodlines.
Don’t let him rewall.
