I had the idea back in the time of the Conquerors expansion for AoE2 that Bohemian civilization should be included.

My thought was to represent the Hussite revolution and civil war in the game.

The idea was that when players reached Feudal Age, they would have two options for advancing to Castle Age in the Town Center.

The first option would be to proceed as Catholics, which would give them better economic and cavalry options.

The second option would be Hussites, which would give them access to gunpowder and wagons, similar to what Bohemians have in the game now.

In campaigns, players would be restricted to the historical requirements.

Additionally, I thought other civilizations could be represented in a similar way.

For example, Teutons could have Catholic vs Reformation, Lithuanians could have Christian vs Paganism, Chinese could have the ability to pick a dynasty, and Italians could choose a city state to represent.

One thing I like about AoE2 is that you’re never technologically limited/punished based on decisions you made earlier in the game.

While forked tech trees could be something introduced in scenarios/etc, I wouldn’t want to see it in standard gameplay.

So basically like AoE 3 does it with its age ups? 😛

I think this is a great idea for a separate medieval RTS, but for AoE2, it’s impossible to reconcile with the gameplay we have now.

    Good thought though.

OP, you invented the AoM (and AoE3, and AoE4) age up mechanism before Ensemble did!

This needlessly overcomplicates the game I think.

What it’s essentially doing is putting two civs in one after a certain threshold (castle age), you have to make a decision halfway thru the game which path you’re taking.

If your opponent can’t have some kind of indicator of what you’re doing it could be unfair.

In aoe4 landmarks do the trick, you can scout which dynasty the Chinese decided to take for example.

I wonder if it might be too much flexibility too.

If you give a civ the potential for all options we end up with more hindustanis type situations where there are no bad matchups.

I don’t think that’s healthy or interesting for the game.

There’s a mod for this: Chivalry: Hegemony.
