My friend and I are interested in playing a two-versus-two online game.

We used to play Age of Empires II a lot when we were younger, and we’ve recently got back into it with the console version, using a mouse and keyboard.

I’m a fan of the Spanish civilization and my friend plays the Mongols.

Is this a good combination for a two-versus-two game?

What advice would you give us to get the most out of these two civilizations?

We don’t expect to be unbeatable, since this is our first time playing online.

Decent pairing, spanish go scouts into knights into paladin, Mongols go archers into xbow into arb/mangudai.

    Solid combo for open maps.

You guys will kick butt in ranked, especially your first games!

Both go Cav and harass ECO early, don’t let them wall.

    Easy wins.

For late game you have a great trade bonus with the spanish, so market trading with teammate is necessary.

Build lots of castles to counter any halberds and used ranged cav to support.

With your movement speed and superior units you should maintain an advantage destroying ECO and fight the fights you want to.

One player playing archer and the other playing cav is in general the meta in 2v2.

During the feudal age it is more likely 1v1 and you start playing with your mate in castle age or late feudal.

Spanish is not a really good civ on open maps unless you can wall and go for conqs on castle age.

Conq are known to be probably the best unique unit in castle age and can be played to apply a lot of pressure on your ennemies.

Mongols can play both cav and archer, have access to camel and mangudai (amazing unique unit you should go in imperial age).

One reasonable strategy for you would be to go scouts into conqs and archers for your mate.

But you should first have fun and enjoy your games!

The civs are a bit similar in terms of units (cav and cav archer type units) but should work fine together – mongols have a better early game with the hunt bonus, so the mongol player can be the one to apply early pressure or bail out the Spanish one.

Then in castle age the Spanish come into their own, while Mongols have a bit of a lull until later in the game.

Just go play online, might have some bad losses at first while you find your elo but just the fact that you’re working together will give you a good advantage over people who are ransoming into teams together
