Most Artfully Crafted Expanding Civilization

When I refer to “expansion civs”, I am referring to the civilizations from Lords of the West, Dawn of the Dukes, and Dynasties of India.

Out of these, my favorite civilization to play and the best designed, in my opinion, is the Poles.

I’d say gurjaras, unpopular pick but I like the mill gimmick and chakrams which makes them unique among cavalry and camel civs, the problem is that the stats of their units are too powerful (shawarma riders) and kshatriyas is too powerful of a tech.

Sicilians just feel like a flop, donjons and serjeants are useless and otherwise they’re just a cavalier civ with a good boom.

    Poles for me.

I think they need to be tuned down for Arena though.

    Let’s see:

Both LotW civs are out of question, Sicilians are too bland, but I feel like devs wasted huge opportunity with Serjants and donjons, Burgundians have flemish so no way they’re well designed lol

From DotD Bohemians are out because they get insta wins against like 80% of the civs on closed maps, Hussite Wagons are kinda bad and Hussite reforms is a useless tech.

Poles I love the design, especially eco bonuses are so creative, but they are too strong rn

And ending with DoI, Bengalis are a very unusual civ, I think they can be discoverd even more going forward, Dravidians are yet another infantry-navy civ, but they still feel distinct enough from let’s say Vikings or Japanese.

And Gurjaras should be deleted from the game 11

I like playing Sicilians, but they’re definitely not well designed.

Poles and Gurjaras seem to be the most oppresive, next to Hindustanis.

I don’t know if that’s the “best design”, but compared to other new civs, they have multiple bonuses that push them to S tier civs.

I personally like Burgundians with their UU* charging.

Also any new civ that has Paladin is a + in my book, if the upgrades are at least decent.

    Dravidians.

I love their elephant archers and solid infantry.

Isn’t a new civ but rather reborn on thr last expansion so Hindustani.

    Got to be the Poles.

They’re straightforward, interesting and strong but not OP.

Burgundians and Bohemians are very gimmicky.

    Sicilians are a non-entity.

Bengalis and Dravidians are just poor.

Gurjaras use alien mechanics but become overpowered with experienced players.

I think Hindustanis are an example of a civ perfected design-wise.

Started out as Indians in the FE mod as a civ that gets early vil bonus, great camels, good gunpowder.

Elephant Archer was pretty much unusable and archers for Indians was being balanced over several patches, like they also got buffs to LCav.

For a long time, it was pretty confused as to where to go.

Eventually they’ve settled on a civ that lost the old, slow Elephant Archer and gained a great Ghulam, and Armored Elephant and Cav Archer.

They even added in a nice theme but kept the cringe female vil mispronunciations, so yay.

If we could include the DE civs I would go for tatars.

Out of the others, let’s see…

    Probably poles tbh.

The obuch is such a good UU against heavy cav civs.

    Winged hussar is on point.

Yeah they might be op on closed maps but after the last nerfs I haven’t seen anyone complain too much about them…

    Portuguese on the other hand…

Dravidians and Bengalis after the monks buff

It’s just the battle elephants that need some buff

    Bengalis imo.

Not 100% there yet but originally designed and decently balanced for most maps.

Bohemians would be second place to me although the hussite wagon and imp UT need a rework I think.

Burgundians are mostly well done but I still think their eco is a bit too strong.

And needless to say flemish needs rework.

Gurjaras is a bit too wacky for my taste but still okay from a design perspective.

Dravidians I find pretty unoriginal and a bit redundant with both respect to existing civs and to the civs options (urumis and champ with UT very similar role for instance).

Poles and Sicilians I’m not too much of a fan.

Civ designed like that are predistined to be either op or underwhelming.

Might be controversial; but Bengalis are a recent standout for me.

I think that the meta supports civs that are more flexible, but even with OG civs like the Goths, there are civs that are one-trick in nature, and I have a huge soft spot for them.

I’m personally not treating ‘best designed’ as ‘powerful’ or ‘balanced’, though.

For me, it’s purely how appealing the civ is, regardless of those factors, and I’m very charmed by what a distinct identity the Bengalis have, despite the number of civs in the game now

    Dravidians.
