Did you run any tests with balanced resource cost instead of balanced numbers?

Skirms are 60 total resources vs 70 for archers, and camels are 115 vs 135 for knights.

    10 camels+10 skirms is 1750 vs 2050 for 10 knights + 10 xbow

Until pop cap/efficiency comes into play, adding 2 camels and a skirm to make the total cost for the camel side 2040 might be the more relevant comparison.

Interesting that the camels ever win at all.

Id think any reasonable micro would tip the scale in the archer’s favor.

Just gotta focus down the camels, which is considerably easier than getting camels to focus down knights or skirms to meaningfully focus down archers.

You have to redo your 2nd test because Japanese don’t have FU cavalier, they miss last defence

    >- All matchups are played out without any micro, full AI control.

This favours the camels because it means the xbows are not focus firing, and neither are the eskirms.

But since the xbows do way more damage to camels than eskirms do to knights, this is worse for the xbows.

    >I guess for most scenarios the predominant view holds up: camels can’t do enough damage to the knights/paladins in time to stop the skirms getting shredded and then camels are not good enough to clear the arbs/xbow on their own.

I don’t think that is at ALL the predominant view, because you sound like the knight are killing the eskirms faster than the camels can kill the knights.

No, the knights and xbows should both be hitting the camels.

The point is that camels can’t kill knights faster than xbows +knights can kill camels (and eskirms can hit whatever their dps is pitiful against everything).

Then the few remaining knights will easily kill the eskirms while the remaining xbows can go home and relax or do whatever.

I think something you could play around with is mixing the ratios of cav-to-ranged to better illustrate the point.

I think in a 10/10 vs 10/10 situation, camels and skirms have the best odds, but if you do comps with similar resource investments and different ratios (like 20 ranged/5 cav, swapping 675 res of knights for 700 res of crossbows) you can learn more about how the units interact.

Portuguese get a 20% discount on gold spent on units, might need to find a different generic civ ;P
