Mongolian Steppe Lancer is a Great Choice!

I have been playing as the Mongols for a while and I really enjoy the civ.

It isn’t the easiest to use, as it requires a lot of gold, but there is a lot of room for strategy and the options are very interesting.

One of the units I haven’t used as much is the Steppe Lancer, but after trying them out, I can say they are a great choice in many situations.

The Steppe Lancer is a less powerful version of the knight line, but it is much easier to mass, cheaper and better against halberdiers.

It is also not as bad against knights.

The main downside is its vulnerability to archers, but because the Mongols have the best siege rams in the game, they can absorb the range damage.

Many people suggest using hussars instead, but they are not as useful as the Steppe Lancer.

They are not as good against cavalry, they are not as good for harassing and they are horrible against halberdiers.

Overall, I think the Steppe Lancer is one of the best units in the game.

I don’t think they need to be buffed, especially for the Mongols.

The only issue I have with them is the cost of the elite upgrade, which could be higher than the Cavalier upgrade, but not too much.

What do you think about Steppe Lancers?

SL is a niche unit imho.

They’re only marginally cheaper than knights and noticeably weaker in 1v1.

You have an edge due to hit and run micro potential in small numbers but once the numbers grow, knights come out on top.

They’re a solid choice against eagles and are extremely powerful if the opponent does not have a huge archer mass.

Once a critical mass is reached though, knights perform better.

They’re a great raiding unit in castle age but are lackluster later on due to less pierce armor than Hussar (especially since Mongols don’t have the last armor upgrade).

“Help me, steppe lancer, I’m stuck!”

“What are you doing, steppe lancer?”

I am a mongols main too, I find steppe lancers are a great offensive play if the enemy used long Palisades that are indefensible (6-8 stepped crack a palisade in 3 hits).

If the enemy is on knights though with better castle age timing you have to run camels for the defensive play.

I think knight/camel + steppe lancer is better than any one unit alone.

Idk why these conversations always devolve to an either-or situation.

I know a guy who went up 200 elo by using only mongol steppe lancer rush.

I feel that they are good in castle age where numbers aren’t large and there is more time to micro them.

In late game, they require too much babysitting to be useful.

They aren’t powerful enough to just get a big ball and run everything down and they also are too expensive to just throw them away as raiders like hussars.

They have their place but sadly they don’t scale well into the end game.

BTW, the 30% hp bonus sounds like a lot, but given a lancer has only 60 hp, that translates to 18 extra hp, essentially extra bloodlines on them.

I took note that the Steppe Lancer was OP for Villese in game 4 when he beat MBL in the QF 4 games to 1…won that game in castle* age with them as the key reason as per my notes. (Yes I took notes on the TTL tourney from 5 months ago while I waited for the Xbox release 😅)

Seems you’re getting downvoted but to my noob eyes I don’t get why, they’re def niche it seems but can be OP in spots

why would you invest in anything else rather than cavalry archers (CA / mangudai) + siege?

You will love the 14 minute FC steppe lancer build order 😉 best unit in the game

It beats knights pretty handily, and the elite version beats paladin, they are one of the strongest units in melee combat in the game, so if anything I think the comments are underselling the unit.

However they do suffer a bit from ranged unit + melee unit combo due to their low pierce armor.
