The game has some amazing parts, such as the story of a pig farmer becoming a Czar and then tragedy.
The missions are also unique, well-designed and interesting.
However, there are some baffling and confusing aspects as well.
While some missions have cool gimmicks or good ideas, they often fall short in their execution, leaving players feeling disappointed.
Mission 1 has too much going on for a first mission, Mission 2 is too simple and easy, and Mission 3 is spammy and grindy.
Mission 4 has an amazing map and idea but lacks direction, and Mission 5 is annoying with having to build up a base twice and fighting random Poles and Genoese.
Overall, the game is a 6.5/10 for me.

I appreciate the outside-the-box thinking and creativity but something doesn’t quite translate.
Another big problem I have with the campaign is that I don’t ever *feel like I’m playing Bulgarians*: never do I want to make use of the militia line, the cheap stone TCs don’t really matter, and while scenario 4 starts in the Feudal Age it doesn’t really encourage the heavy Feudal play Bulg are known for.
It is cool to build Kreposts in 3 and stock them with cav archers (not terrible for Bulg) but things like no farming in 1 (you want farms for your best units) or the end of 5 (why use the dreadful navy into infinite spam…) feel more like something you’d want to do with Portuguese or another civ besides Bulg.

March 31, 2023 at 10:48 am #25015Clear_Astronaut7895GuestI don’t like Ivaylo at all.
1: The no farm gimmick is not bad, but Tamerlane does it a lot better.
I dislike constantly having to retask my hunters.
2: Too short, too easy, most of the map is irrelevant.
The mission doesn’t incentivise you to get the relics.
3: 100x more difficult than the other missions.
I dislike missions where you have to marco polo first to not run into enemies or get gaia units.
4: If you’re asking me to scout my way through the mountains, I need you to give me some time to do so.
But at the same time I have to babysit the other guy and his 2 monks.
There’s nothing I can do to help him, besides converting enemies.
This is annoying.
5: This one is weird, because there is seemingly no continuation between both parts of the mission.
This should have been done differently.
Perhaps 2 separate missions.
Also, we’ve seen the tower trick before and I don’t think any scenario needs it.

March 31, 2023 at 10:48 am #25017Majorman_86GuestFirst 3 are fine, but 4 and 5 are weird.
They aren’t continuous scenarios, but cut into interlude/intermission/actual scenario parts.
Otherwise, I don’t hate the King of the Hill (2) and the great unit spam (3) scenarios.
If I have to compare it to something, it would be Dracula.
Dracula has one scenario that plays like a weird board game with territory control, another weird one where you have to defend a few cities for a time w/o any economy of your own.
And on top of that, Breath of the Dragon, a 1 vs 4 mixed map where Dracula is stuck with Slav’s inferior navy and range.
