It Has Been More Than Two Weeks and Windows 7 Users Cannot Play the Game Anymore.

Since the last update, Windows 7 users have been receiving an error message that the procedure entry point CreateFile2 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.

This has been the case for over two weeks and the only response from the subreddit was a promise two weeks ago.

Is there any news on this issue, or has the game abandoned Windows 7 users?

If so, it would be a very painful breakup after a three year relationship.

Can I suggest something like tiny11 or windows 10 AME?

These are unofficial but available builds which do away with issues most people have with 10 and 11.

I haven’t used it myself, but it might make sense for you to check it out.

IF this works out, please post on the subreddit to help others.

I guess now that windows 10’s support is announced to end in 2025, I’m not surprised if they ditch older OS.

    I’m sorry for your problems.

Windows 7 is no longer supported, and AoE2DE is not Windows 7 compatible either, it’s 2023 so maybe it’s time you move on to a new OS.

Windows 7 was officially end-of-life three years ago and you need to switch.

    End of story.

People who are still using end-of-life software are that software leaks and ransomware is still an issue.

If by “finally officially ditching” you mean “ditched 3 years ago” then answer is yes.

We are talking about a Microsoft game and Microsoft really hates you if you do not use their latest OS.

They have zero intention to ever fix a windows 7 issue and the only solution officially you will get it is “install latest supported OS”.

But maybe you can fix the issue yourself if the issue is just missing DLL file (a big IF).

You can google various solutions on how to do it.

The last case scenario is to just manually download the KERNEL32.dll yourself.

Best case is to double check with someone you know, last thing you want is to follow some stranger’s advice online that could damage your pc.

You should quit win 7 as soon as possible.

It’s dead from 2020 and there is absolutely no reason to use it

Although this doesn’t address the issue itself, if you don’t want to switch to Windows 10, a Linux distro is always an option.

I drive Linux pretty much exclusively and I play AoE 2 with no issues.

There are extra steps to get it running online but it’s all described on protondb.

And Linux itself nowadays is pretty easy to get into, the major beginner friendly distros are easy to install (arguably easier than Windows) and the user experience is very nice.
