To build a formidable military force, it is important to have a large cavalry nation.

This will allow for quick and efficient movement of troops, as well as the ability to quickly respond to enemy threats.

To ensure success in battle, it is essential to have a variety of units available, including heavy cavalry, light cavalry, and infantry.

Heavy cavalry is best used to charge and break enemy lines, while light cavalry is better suited for scouting and skirmishing.

Infantry should be used to form a defensive line, as well as to provide support to the cavalry.

Additionally, it is wise to have a reserve of pikes and other polearms to defend against enemy cavalry charges.

With a well-rounded army, it is possible to create an effective fighting force that is capable of withstanding enemy attacks.

You mean create a scenario or just play all cav?

Huns are a good all cav-civ, but the steppe lancers from cumans/mongols always felt very rohirimy to me.

Cataphracts do well vs pike but they’re not very on-theme.

Cataphracts (from Byzantines) come to mind as heavy cavalry that counters infantry, but Cataphracts themselves need support from non-cavalry units to deal with ranged units.

So let’s instead explore civs with lots of cavalry as well as cavalry archer units that can deal with pikemen.

Magyars and Mongols have the strongest viable fully mounted late game armies.

Both have a cavalry archer core supported by expendable, fast, light cavalry options.

Mongols have more damage output through their Mangudai unique unit, Magyars have cheaper and sturdier frontline options (Magyar Huszar are more like medium cavalry) and the best non-unique Cavalry Archers.

Magyars are also the only civ with fully upgraded Paladin and Heavy Cavalry Archer, but that’s extremely expensive.

As for mid game (Castle Age), Huns excel at pumping out either Cavalry Archers (cheaper) or Knights (stables work faster).

Tatars also have viable Castle Age Cavalry Archers as well as a stronger boom than Huns.

Meanwhile, Berbers have both discounted heavy cavalry (even camels, but no Paladin) as well as a viable Camel Archer unique unit that counters other cavalry archers and is better is almost every way.

They are the camel Rohirrim, so to speak.

If I remember correctly, Rohan’s cavalry were largely heavy cavalry rather than light cavalry, so you’re essentially asking “which Knight civ do you recommend and what units should I support them with?”

There are quite a few Knight civs out there, but if you want a convenient balanced army composition with relatively few types of units, I’d recommend the **Persians**, with their trash Xbows supporting their Knight line.

Xbows fare well against all three of the main Knight line counters I mentioned above, and their primary weaknesses (Skirmishers, Siege, and Light Cavalry) are countered effectively by Knights.

I know that Rohan is commonly represented by the Huns, at least in LoTr mods and some argue that such civ keeps somewhat of their “savage” heritage

Sicilians are pretty good for this.

They resist some bonus damage, and have a technology to make their heavy cavalry tougher.

Cataphracts & to a lesser extent, Hauberk Cavaliers.

Anything else, cavalry dies hard to halbs.

Any civ with decent cav archers – My main suggestions would be Magyars or Huns, since you can go Cav Archer + Light cav as a solid composition, have access to a good Knight line if you need it and also a unique cav unit to spice things up 🙂
I think this mix of ranged and melee cav should fit the rohirrim idea quite well.

They are heavy cavalry with a spear/lance and a heavy charge.

    Coustillier?

From the optics alone maybe steppe lancers.
