Hello to the AoE2 community!
I noticed that on my Steam account store, there are three versions of Age of Empires II: the Definitive Edition, the 2013 version, and a combo of the two.
Additionally, there are a bunch of DLCs for the Definitive Edition and the 2013 version.
People seem to recommend the Definitive Edition, but is there a reason to own both versions of the game?
What about the DLCs?
If I want to play online or get really into the game, will I need to purchase these add-ons?
Also, I saw that the Definitive Edition is currently on sale on Steam at 65% off.
Is this the version I should go for?
Thank you for your help!
Do check out the Hidden Cup hosted by t90 😏
Get DE
I wanted the classic experience so I bought HD Edition + DE bundle.
I play both.
If there’s anyone still reading this:
Launched the game and it said I don’t have HD graphics mode installed.
How does one go about fixing that?
HD sounds sweet, although I’ve got to say game looks pretty good as it is right now.
While I’m at it, should I be looking to install any other mods?
I saw there are a bunch in the Mods section when you hit Esc.
the combo is just in case u already own the old 2013 version, so that u can get DE for a discount.
DE is the new version and the one (almost) everyone plays (including t90).
the 2 DLCs are optional, they are pretty good, so get it if u want to, but definitly not necessary
Awesome that you discovered the game, T90 is a great guy!
The game can be a bit difficult to learn but make sure you try the art of war game modes they teach a lot of the basics of the game.
Also the campaign’s with a one sword difficulty are also a place to start.
You should also check out Spirit of the Law on YouTube, he makes really insightful videos on the mechanics of aoe2
The bundle is also helpful if you already had the 2013 edition as steam offered a discount.
If you don’t have any, then just get DE.
See you on the ladder my friend!
Man I used to play Aoe2 pirated version vs AI due to no internet in our house in 2005.
This guy T90 triggered that core nostalgia recently and now i badly want to get a PC and start playing again.
If you want to play as the Indians, play the El Dorado campaign, or research Boiling Oil or Obsidian Arrows, play HD.
Otherwise, DE is a lot better.
AOE 2 DE, out of all the age of empires games this one is the most complete offering with the most amount of content and i dare say, the biggest player base
T90 and membTV have revolutionized this game over the past decade.
It’s been amazing to see how big the community has grown. (Also Dave and SpiritoftheLaw rock too)
AOE2 Definition edition is the newest version (which most people use) and you dont need to own the DLCs to play multiplayer, they add few civilisations into game, but there is still a lot to pick from in base game.
You can even be matched against people playing civilisations you dont own so there really is no issue with multiplayer and not owning DLCs.
Get DE and only DE
T90 plays/casts AoE II Definitive Edition.
You do not need the DLCs.
