I recently began playing Age of Empires II about four to five days ago and have already played eight to nine ranked games, winning one of them.
After each game, I noticed that I was usually ahead of my opponent in terms of reaching Feudal and Castle Age, but I’m terrible at attacking and defending.
Can you provide me with some tips on when I should start walling and making military units?
Also, if you know any guides on how to attack and defend, that would be great.
Basically, I feel like I’m just playing a farming simulator instead of a real strategy game.
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9053estDivisionChampsGuestThe average player is pretty good at this game.
They know, 2 build orders, hotkeys for buildings and producing units.
They know counters and unit compositions.
Losing your first 8-9 games is par for the course.

As someone else said, with nothing to go on, any game using an elo system will stick you right in the middle at first.
Losing 10 or even 20 in a row is not uncommon.
But trust in the system – it really will start matching you with equal opposition soon.
Do try watching some YouTube games to see what better players do – I find T90 an excellent caster, and as someone else mentioned, his LowELO Legends series was really helpful when I started, because it’s him commenting on games played by noobs – tons of beginners tips naturally come up.
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9055HelvedicaGuestEveryone loses a bunch if games when they start so that the systwm can adjust your ranking to where you are compared to other of your skill level.
The first 15 ir so games are just to place you.
Youll feel more comfortable ince your elo settles
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9056HarveygodGuestThis is normal and should start getting better for you soon if it hasn’t already.
When you play ranked, you are placed with people near your own Elo rating.
This is why it takes a few minutes to queue up; the server is trying to match opponents as evenly as it can.
The default starting Elo is 1000, which is right in the middle.
The basic experience is that new players lose the first few games until their Elo lowers to the point that it accurately represents their level of play.
Since you just won your first game, you’re probably right about there, now.
So, you should probably start winning about half of your games going forward (unless you get better or worse at the game).
I think the ranked ladder is a blast but every player’s first few games can be a bit discouraging.
Once you get through it (which you probably already have), it gets much better.
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9057YourpersonalpilotGuestWatch some low elo legends videos on t90 helped me alot to understand especially when you find ab your elo
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9058DarthInvaderZimGuestI’ve lost over 400 games, 8-9 is nothing lol.
ELO fluctuates between 1100-1300.
Just normal.
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9059IandaConquerorGuestHera has a lot of free build orders with good instructions.
You can join his discord and download the build orders here: [https://discord.gg/nCAKmdWq](https://discord.gg/nCAKmdWq)
I would recommend straight archers or scouts to start with.
Pick an easy civ like Franks, Britons, make your best unit all game, and focus on running your TC, spending your resources, not getting housed.
Just following a simple build order and doing those 3 things will get you to 1200 ELO.
No fancy builds, flashy micro, or insane eco-management needed.
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9060redditpeep210GuestLow elo players always under-make and under-use military.
I’d look up a very basic build order to get you to feudal age at 20-22 vills and then make either scouts or archers and go attack your opponent.
Practice doing that while keeping your villager production going and it will improve your game more than anything else.
Once you can keep your eco running and control your military at the same time you can try out different strategies like man at arms, drush, tower rushing, fast castling etc but that will help you get the solid foundation.
Regarding walling I wouldn’t worry about it too much at the moment as it encourages a defensive mindset, focus on making army instead.
If you have no military you want your walls down before your opponent gets to feudal age as at that point their scout can effectively deny walling.
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9061ObiWansTinderAccountGuestSearch YouTube for a basic build order like scout rush or fast castle into knights.
Losing several games while your elo stabilizes is normal.
Try the in game “art of war” challenges to get an idea of what’s important for online play.
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9062thisiscottyGuestyou need chance for your ELO to get to your level
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9063Amash2024GuestScouts into 1 tc knights from three stables with forward siege is incredibly effective at my elo (950ish).
In fact I literally don’t think I’ve ever lost with a civ that actually gets knights since I started trying it a month or so back.
You can probably download a recording of one of my open map games from aoe2insights or something if what I said doesn’t make sense to you.
There are far better players than me here to answer your question, but I’ve found that more and earlier aggression is usually better.
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9064crazyyocoGuestBeing first to feudal and castle dosent help much if you cant do anything with it.
Sometimes is better to go up a bit later and have more eco to make military.
Walling depends on what is your opening army.
If you go for maa you can affor to wall feudal becuse maa keeps opponent in his base.
If you are doing archers or fc you need to wall while in dark age.
February 4, 2023 at 10:36 am #9065kokandevattenGuestA good tip is at latest start walling when you hit feudal with one or 2 vills.
Most players start walling with at least one vill when the start aging up to feudal.
If you are just looking to win elo quickly on sub 1200 easiest way is probably to full wall yourself before 11 minute mark and go to feudal with 27-30 vills and make 2 vills in feudal age while getting age up buildings for castle age and spam knights.
