I used to play the game when I was younger and now I’m revisiting it and playing through the campaigns.

I’m looking for basic tips and strategies, as I’m familiar with the concept of choke points and other military tactics, but I’m having difficulty defeating the moderate AI.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    1.

Learn at least one basic build order so you have a smooth Dark Age.
    2.

Always be producing villagers, until you hit 120 or so.
    3.

Spend your resources as quickly as they come in, unless you’re saving for something in particular.

Resources sitting in the bank are wasted.
    4.

Get blacksmith upgrades for your units.
    5.

    Understand the basic counters.

    Spear/cavalry, archer/skirmisher.

If you’ve get those five things down, you shouldn’t have any trouble with the moderate, or even hard, AI.

My advice depends on where you’re going with this.

If you want to stick to single player:
    – the AI is very weak vs static defenses.

It is totally lost against a trush.

It will suicide itself into your castle if you build it forward compared to your other buildings.

The AI mostly makes a beeline to the closest enemy building, even if it is an abandoned mining camp.

They rarely circumvent your defenses to prioritize raiding your economy.
    – The AI is terrible against archer rushes.

It easy to have won a game by early castle age by virtue of having wiped out all their villagers.
    – The AI overreacts to scout rushes and over invests in spears.

Transition onto archers thereafter and they are toast.

If you’re interested in playing multiplayer, you best abandon playing the AI altogether.

Playing against it generally leads to bad habits that hamper your ability to shine in multiplayer.

The only single player scenarios I would really recommend in that case are the ‘Art of War’ tutorials, which seem to have been made with multiplayer in mind and which, in any case, present some challenges, even for decent players, at least if you’re going for the gold medals.

Vs humans I think there is a lot of information out there, build orders and a lot of great content creators an YouTube (Survivalist, Hera, T90, …) who put out very good learning material, either with tips and analyses in them, or by casting games of people and commenting on their mistakes.

The campaigns and random map game modes have different AI difficulty spikes.

The campaign icons also have swords on them that indicate how difficult the actually design of the campagin scenarios.

But playing through the tutorial is the best way to start learning the game.
